"Some may try to make us believe that by transitioning the oversight of the IANA functions to the global multistakeholder community, we risk having authoritarian regimes take control of the Internet via an intergovernmental body such as the United Nations.

This is just wrong and is a mischaracterization of what the transition really means."

- Internet Society President & CEO Kathryn Brown writing about #IANASteward on The Hill

Today was a good day for the global Internet! The IANA stewardship transition reached another milestone as Larry Strickling of the US Department of Commerce National Telecommunications & Information Administration shared that it intends to allow the IANA functions contract to expire as of October 1, barring any significant impediments. (See his blog post at the link below.)

Reaching this milestone is a testament to the strength of the transition package developed with input from—and support by—the broad Internet community and submitted earlier this year to the NTIA. It is also a result of the sustained efforts by the operational communities to implement that package. There are still steps to be taken to complete the transition, and work will continue over the next several weeks.

We at the Internet Society continue to strongly support the transition and we remain fully engaged in seeing this most important transition to its finish.
