With a deep dedication to intercultural cooperation, Rwanda has moved beyond the dramatic events of the mid-90s. A visit there now reveals the artistry of Rwanda's major basket weaving cooperative Gahaya Links -- well known to International Folk Art Market attendees. Co-founders Janet Nkubana & Joy Ndungutse will guide you through the workings of Gahaya Links and its hundreds of basket makers. The impact that folk art commerce has on their lives is a sight to see, as is the vibrant, uniquely African urban scene of Rwanda's major cities, Kigali and Butare.
.
But Rwanda is more than baskets and cities. You'll visit potters and an all-women drummers group in the South. If you choose, you can explore the Virunga Volcanoes, the verdant home of majestic gorillas and the thriving ecosystem that surrounds them.
.
Journey to the heart of Africa with the International Folk Art Alliance: it will be a life changing experience.

Self Help Enterprise (SHE) Foundation is social entrepreneurship in action in the rural Bengal region of India. #socialentrepreneur #impact #empowerwomen #folkartalliance #india
.
Over 800 women participate in this prosperous social enterprise. SHE Foundation creates dignified livelihoods, empowers women to gain financial independence, and enables women to earn year-round income to improve their lives and their extended families. The cooperative works to promote and sell textiles that showcase Kantha embroidery—a centuries-old technique of sewing layers of recycled fabrics together.
.
To gain more access and outreach in their home community, SHE Foundation employs young women to go into rural villages to train their peers to continue the cultural legacy of the Kantha stitch and become SHE Foundation artists. Moreover, the organization provides support that includes health care services, nutritional drink packets, vitamins, water purifiers, loans for home improvements, installations of solar lights, and water hand pumps—all to generate life-changing impact in SHE Foundation's rural community.
.
IFAA is honored to have SHE Foundation in our folk art family and to support the empowerment of change agents in their community. Due to their profound community impact, SHE Foundation was recognized this year as an IFAA Community Impact Award finalist.
