Did you know sand could sing?
Having researched national instruments from around the world, I started thinking about natural noises. Not boring ones like birdsong or whale calls - we've all heard those before! I'm talking about the noises of the planet.

"The lavender in #Provence is grown for soap and cosmetics but is also used in local cuisine. Apparently, you can have a lavender sorbet!"
I really love flowers, and this blog post is just an excuse for me to look at pictures of them.

"From September onwards, huge swathes of butterflies fill the skies, travelling from southern #Canada and the #USA ‬, to #Mexico, where they spend the winter, eating burritos and drinking Corona (probably)."
Spring has finally sprung, and what clearer sign of this can there be than the sight of butterflies drifting around the garden, gathering nectar? Well, I guess bees making a comeback (which I'm sure I'll cover in the near future) and daffodils emerging.

"How do you like your eggs in the morning? Boiled in wee."
After a hard day at work, I do love to get home, pop the kettle on and make some dinner. I don't tend to follow specific recipes as I'm pretty experimental in the kitchen. I'm a strong believer in the "chuck it in and see if it works" style of cooking.

Could come in handy if you're still not sure what to have for dinner tonight... 🐝 🐛🐜
I'm a very fussy eater. Unless I've eaten something before, and enjoyed it, there's a strong chance I'll just stare at it suspiciously for a few seconds, before slowly pushing the plate or bowl away from me.

"As the British summer approaches (taking its time, as per usual), we soon get to enjoy losing out on an hour’s sleep. Aren’t we lucky? But why did we start this practice, anyway?"
You might be surprised just why and how Daylight Saving Time started...

"I can’t imagine you've ever really considered the history of tapas, have you? I mean, what’s to consider? Who doesn’t want a tiny plate of food with their drink?" #food #tapas
I can't imagine you have ever really considered the history of tapas, have you? I mean, what's to consider? Who doesn't want a tiny plate of food with their drink? Actually, my 18-year-old self wouldn't have; eating was cheating you see.

Did you know that, in #Vietnam, everyone celebrates their birthday on the same day?
Watching the Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations, I felt inspired to find out how other people around the world celebrate their favourite day of the year. Vietnam In Vietnam, all birthdays are celebrated on Tết, which is their New Year’s Day. On the day, parents, close friends and other relatives congratulate children on becoming a year …

"It’s certainly true that you can die from having a coconut drop on your head, so we wouldn't advise taking a nap under a palm tree – even if a falling coconut avoids cracking your skull, there are plenty of other delicate targets."
Over 62 million tonnes of coconuts are grown worldwide every year and, if you think that sounds like an awful lot of Malibu and Bountys, it just shows how little you must know about them.

"The word liquorice comes from an old French word, which comes from an old Greek word, meaning 'sweet root'. I can’t help but think there must have been an error here… Yes, it comes from a root, but I wouldn't describe the flavour as sweet. If I had to pick an adjective for the flavour of liquorice, it would be 'filth'."
Once, in Iceland, I joyfully bit into my first mystery bar and found... liquorice. Liquorice pieces within the chocolate bar. The horror.

Who's been to Batman in #Turkey? Or how about Accident, #Maryland?
It must be hard to come up with a great name for a place on the spur of the moment, but some of the places on this list show that, sometimes, it might be best to spend a bit more time thinking about it.

"The phrase 'Dutch courage' is believed to have started after English soldiers, fighting in Antwerp during the Eighty Years’ War, used to drink gin to help calm their nerves before battle. I’d probably rather go into battle half-cut, myself…"
Certain drinks seem to be associated with Britain, and for good reason. We all love a tea, a glass of Pimms on a hot summer's day (still too close to a salad for my liking) or a nice G&T. But as with many things, there's more to a drink of gin and tonic than you might expect.

Never ever use this company. They are shocking. They only told me my policy was single trip after I tried to make a claim. NOWHERE in my policy does it say Single Trip. I have the receipt to show you if you wish to see it. Stay far away. They are only after your money and will not help you. I am now abroad and with no travel insurance as it became void and they did nothing to help me when they told me this. NEVER USE THEM THEY WILL RUIN YOUR TRIP!!

Their Travel Insurance policies are a CON - do not buy! I purchased travel insurance with InsureAndGO for a weekend trip, my flights were cancelled due to an Air Controller strike... This cost me a lot of money as I lost return flights, car rental, hotel, etc. I had purchased a full policy with InsureAndGo but when I tried to claim they said this was my own fault for not checking beforehand for an organised strike.. They make it easy to buy a policy with them but make it as difficult as possible to contact them if you need to make a claim - Check Google other people have also complained of them doing the same thing!
