There are significantly higher rates of comorbidities in youth with type 2 diabetes vs type 1 diabetes, with three out of four type 2 diabetics developing one or more comorbid conditions by age 21, compared to only one in three type 1 diabetics.

Diabetes-related comorbidities include cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, retinopathy (eye disease), nerve damage and hypertension. Insulin therapy can reduce the risk for all of them.

Given the connection between obesity and type 2 diabetes, many people think the difference between someone at risk and someone who isn't comes down to body mass index (BMI). While obesity is still the best predictor for diabetes, factors such as a family history of the disease, poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle are shown to increase risk.

The death toll is higher than previously expected for the United States, which leads the world in spending on diabetes at $320 billion per year. The finding came to light through a study conducted by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania and Boston University and published in PLOS ONE.

Nearly half of the world’s population could be obese or overweight by 2030 according to a report from the Global Panel on Agriculture and Food Systems for Nutrition, which identified poor diets as the primary factor. The Global Panel warned that “the risk that poor diets pose to mortality and morbidity is now greater than the combined risks of unsafe sex, alcohol, drug and tobacco use.”
