#Parents: You don't need to prepare #ThanksgivingDinner. Have your #kids join in. They may be better assistants than you think!

Kids at any age can easily set a table. #Children between the ages of 6-10 can also help with light food preparations like measuring ingredients, mixing and pouring. This is also a great way to build their dexterity skills as they develop.

Today is a great day to encourage #kids that #writing can be #fun. Help your #child with their #languagedevlopment by using a montessori writing tray.

It is simple to make, easy to do and an entertaining way to improve reading and writing skills. Just take a small tray and fill it with sand, sugar or salt. Using any set of alphabet flash cards, have your child trace each letter they see into the sand.

Implementing writing into a playful activity can help encourage your son or daughter to enjoy the process of learning how to write. Tracing each letter also assist with dexterity, building the motor skills needed in order to use writing tools as they grow.

According to Diane Paul, the director of clinical issues in #SpeechLanguagePathology at the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, it is not bad for #parents to mimic #toddlerspeak as long as it's not done frequently. She says,"A child is not going to develop a #speech and #language problem because you occasionally say baba instead of bottle.” What you can do to #help your #child master #language is to talk to him/her as much as possible. It's best not to overtly correct your child: a good example is if he/she says "I goed to the park" don’t say, "No no no, it's not goed, it's went” say, "You're right, we went to the park yesterday” instead. Overall, look for red flags but be patient and enjoy their cute mistakes because they won't be making them forever!

According to Penn State College of Medicine researchers, using #SignLanguage with intensive #SpeechTherapy may be effective treatment for children with #apraxia.

#ChildhoodApraxia is a motor #SpeechDisorder that makes saying sounds, syllables, and words, difficult because the muscles involved do not coordinate properly.

A common misconception is that teaching children sign language will slow down progress when learning to #speak. However, research has shown, that sign language can reduce frustration and #encourage attempts at #VerbalSpeech.

In the case study, a patient underwent intensive speech therapy with a professional and sign language at home. As the patient’s speech quickly developed, he discontinued use of sign language on his own.

Dr. Cheryl Tierney, associate professor of pediatrics,
said, "More research is needed to determine how much the use of sign language contributed to such rapid correction of apraxia of speech. However, our case highlighted that when we combined early detection, early treatment and the use of sign language we had an optimal outcome which suggests an area of further study."

Here are a few tips to #developing  your child’s #selfesteem :

1. #BeAssertive
Teach your child the difference between being assertive and being aggressive. For example, an aggressive child may wrestle a playmate away from their toys. On the other hand, an assertive child would say, " I'd like a turn when you are done".

2. #Discuss  Issues
Get involved with your children. Talk out any issues they may be experiencing and work on understanding the situation from their perspective to build trust and character.

3. Make #Time
Clear time out of your day to step away from electronic devices and connect with your child. Simple reading to them or playing their favorite games with them can greatly improve their self-esteem.

4. Put Your Child in Charge
Let your child take control of certain task such as picking their next fun activity to try or selecting their own clothes for the day. This helps boost confidence in children.

5. Use #PositiveLanguage
Reinforce good behavior by using positive words to praise your child. #Celebrate each milestone made. #Children are happy to respond with more good habits and behavior when rewarded with positive language.

Our professional team is here to help children build self-confidence and improve their speech and language skills. Should you have any concerns on the development of your child's speech, feel free to call our #BeverlyHills #SpeechTherapist.

#SocialInteraction may be enjoyed by most children but for some, it could be very intimidating. #SocialSkillGroups are designed for a small group of children of the same age range who have difficulty in #SocialSettings. Groups are led by an adult who teaches #children about #Friendship, #ProblemSolving , and starting/maintaining a conversation. #Kids with nonverbal leaning disabilities, #ADHD, and #autism or #ASD can greatly benefit from social skill groups.
To learn more about social skills groups or sign up, please contact #InnovativeSpeechAndLanguagePathology at (310) 933-1265.

Most children go through a period of #disfluency in which they #stutter. If you are worried about your child's speech, talk to someone who specializes in childhood stuttering instead of waiting to see if they outgrow it.

At home, listen to your child and let them know that what they are saying is more important than how they are saying it. #BePatient and let them speak instead of rushing to finish their sentences. It is important to view #stuttering as another difficulty in the process of #learning a new skill and #talkaboutit.
