World War I fighting ceased in 1918 when a temporary truce, or armistice, was signed between the Germany and the Allied Nations on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. In November of 1919, President Wilson declared that November 11 be the first observance of Armistice Day “to be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory.” Armistice Day was originally set aside to honor veterans of World War I, but after World War II required the greatest mobilization of military personnel at the time, 1954 saw an amendment to the Act of 1938 changing the name of the holiday to Veterans Day and it became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.
Since becoming a national holiday, Veterans Day has not always been celebrated on November 11. Due to the Uniform Holiday Bill of 1968 going into effect in 1971 to give federal employees three-day weekends, therein celebrating Veterans Day on a Monday, the holiday was actually observed on October 25. This caused much confusion and it became apparent that the commemoration Veterans Day was a matter of patriotic and historic significance to many citizens. President Ford signed a law in 1975 that returned Veterans Day to its original date of November 11 beginning in 1978.
Today we thank America’s veterans for their patriotism and love of country, and above all, we honor them for the sacrifices they have made for us in the name of freedom.

There may be many people that we know who believe that when Labor Day comes, we get to enjoy a Monday off from work and celebrate by having a barbecue. While we are fortunate to enjoy those things on Labor Day, the holiday does have another more significant meaning. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Labor Day is dedicated to recognizing the social and economic achievement of American workers and their contributions to the prosperity, strength, and well-being of our country. Labor Day celebrations began in 1882, but the government first recognized the holiday in 1885. On June 28, 1894 Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September a legal holiday. As you celebrate Labor Day this year, remember that you are also celebrating the achievements of American workers!

Valentine’s Day is a day that is celebrated by many people around the world. Many people celebrate by giving the one they love a card, candy, or flowers. Did you know that it wasn’t until the second half of the twentieth century that the practice of exchanging greeting cards began to extend to giving all manner of gifts? The practice of giving jewelry as a Valentine’s gift is a familiar one, but it wasn’t until the 1980s that the diamond industry began to promote Valentine’s Day as an occasion for giving jewelry. Giving cards is still the most popular Valentine’s Day practice with North American elementary students exchanging cards in their classrooms, and the U.S. Greeting Card Association estimates that approximately one billion cards are sent for the holiday worldwide each year, making the holiday the second largest card-sending holiday of the year. How will you celebrate Valentine’s Day?
