Storm blew one of our rubbish bins into the water. It was promptly rescued!

Fiddly little bits. SMD soldering is not my favorite thing in the world, but I managed to jiggle the replacement for this LNA into place and solder it correctly in only two attempts. Now my Raynav 300 picks up a few more satellites than before.

Fixed my Raynav 300 - it was missing a GPS antenna, and the Raymarine one cost £54 even for a used, 15 year old antenna (not the Raystar ones that output NMEA, but a simple active coax one). Replaced it with a matching car antenna for £7 instead, pried out the magnet and voila, I have a GPS fix again.

This is just a backup unit and I'm not sure I'll keep it, but I still wanted to fix it first in any case (especially considering the insane prices that used Raymarine kit of this generation seems to fetch).

My old 100 A shunt. Didn't work so well anymore, as all that corrosion probably changed the resistance a fair bit, even if the small screw where the voltmeter goes hadn't snapped right off. Saltwater is highly destructive.

Installed a VHF antenna splitter and AIS receiver. Thanks to the kind folk of Brighton Belle (http://brightonbelle.org/) for their (not that) old hardware.

The inside of a satellite dish for use at sea. Gyroscopes track the movement of the boat, the information is processed and the boats motion is counteracted by the motors in this picture moving in carefully calculated ways to keep the dish aligned as the boat rolls, pitches and yaws all at once. Normally all of this is hidden inside a plastic dome to protect it from the weather and nobody can see all the action happening in there.

This is part of the reason why maritime internet is so expensive. The other part are the satellites this dish talks to :-)
