Chartplotter repair again. This tiny coil in the CCFL inverter got broken by a flatband cable that I pushed into the wrong place and then when the boat moved it must've shoved against it until the coil snapped off its plastic foot and the wire broke.

Glued the plastic back on with some Hafixs and then soldered the tiny wire you can see here back together. Voila, the display lights up once again.

Made a stainless steel cockpit speaker mount, to replace the crappy plastic one that was broken in several pieces.

I love when OS X spontaneously decides that drag & drop is not going to work anymore until an app is restarted. This used to be a Finder exclusive "feature", but apparently has now also spread to Preview.app. What the fuck.

It's made more annoying by Preview.app being unable to remember which page I was reading in any of the PDF documents I had open. I know you have to fumble around in Objective-C, but is it really that hard to code that?

Grumble.

Out there at last. After a year of refitting, Songbird passed today's test sail. The work is far from done of course, but at least I can sail in between. Yay!

I went for a swim under the boat today, at least until my balls started crawling up my throat in search for some remaining body heat.

Managed to scrub the rudder clean after filming this, abrade the anode a bit and also a bit of the hull. Also cleared the log and depth sounder. Propeller and saildrive didn't really need it.

Bit footage from today. Unfortunately the camera battery died before it got exciting!

I was experimenting with the in-mast furling to see what it could and could not deal with (while I still have the 16 year old baggy main, so I don't have to worry about damaging a new sail). Well, experiment successful, I learnt what it does not like and jammed it at the first spreader. Managed to furl it in, but not fully sort it underway, so I continued on with just the Genoa. This worked, but not that well as the boat is poorly balanced without the main, especially with the Genoa reefed due to conditions. Sea state kept building and it got pretty bouncy, but I had to stay out a few hours longer to wait for the tide to come back in to get into my berth.

Some wet and exciting sailing later, I trundled into the shelter of the marina breakwater, carefully eyeing the depth sounder, kicked the fenders over the side and moored up solo in a good blow on first try, much to my immense satisfaction (it was Sunday, so everyone was watching). Once I'd tied the boat off, I noticed the depth sounder read 0.1m (under keel). Phew, cut it close but made it! :D

Varnishing the binnacle instrument pod. It's summer, so one coat per day instead of one every two days. Double speed!

Chartplotter repair. The power button softkey functionality wasn't working. It could be switched on, but the power button signal didn't arrive at the ARM 7500 CPU, so it couldn't be switched off, nor could the radar be controlled.

As I only had a block diagram and no circuit diagram, and couldn't very well trace signals on a multi-layer PCB, I simply resoldered the most likely candidates from the connector where I could measure the button signal. After three turns of that, the button started working :)

Swedish for "fremdschämen". Because a word was needed for current UK politics.
Pronunciation[edit]. IPA: /ˈɧɛmsˌkɵdːe/. Etymology[edit]. From skämmas (“to be embarrassed”) + kudde (“pillow; (couch) cushion”). It refers to the idea of seeing something so embarrassing that one gets the urge to hide one's face in a pillow or couch cushion, for example when watching a ...
