High-end camera series ImageIR® from InfraTec with new high-speed mode for higher frame rates and increased thermal resolution at the same time

When solving demanding thermal measurement and testing tasks, users of thermal imaging cameras with cooled detectors usually face a difficult decision: Should thermograms be acquired in a specific field of view (FOV) with a full, usually native, pixel number and the resulting high spatial resolution? Or should sequences be recorded and stored at a high frame rate in this FOV to ensure a high temporal resolution? Both at the same time is not possible, because the readout speed of the cameras limits their frame rate for a given number of pixels.

InfraTec has now resolved this balancing act and offers an entirely new level of flexibility for its high-end camera series ImageIR®.

Ten years ago, InfraTec opened its first international branch. What began in 2007 in Grapevine within close proximity to the Dallas metropolis of millions, has been continued for several years by employees a few miles east in Plano.

MicroScan significantly increases the geometrical resolution capability of the ImageIR® camera series

Concepts for increasing the geometrical resolution of thermographic cameras have belonged to the state of the art of technology for years. InfraTec is now taking this one step further. With MicroScan, the company is introducing an option to quadruple the image format for a radiometric thermography camera used in the civil sector with cooled FPA photon detector for the first time.

After launching the LRM-254 just a few months ago, InfraTec has expanded its range of miniaturized multi channel detectors. With the LRM-102 and LRM-202 a pair of two-channel detectors with an aperture opening of around 6 mm2 are now following in the TO46 housing.

Rare moment

As the word winter solstice already reveals, on that day the sun usually attracts interest. We have thrown a closer look at their opponent on 21st December and think that the moon has its radiant moments, too – even more by looking through the super-telephoto lens of a high-end thermography camera.

The (serious) thermographer, of course, immediately has questions in mind like spectral range, inherent radiation of the moon, solar reflection and atmospheric transmission, because he thinks of temperature measurement on the moon’s surface. That is exactly what he has in common with us. Therefore, you can be curios how we approach this – admitted somewhat distant – measurement object to demonstrate the capability of measurement technology offered by InfraTec in the near future.

More speed for thermographic cameras with MCT detectors
A special high-speed configuration increases the range of applications of the camera series ImageIR® 8300

International users of thermographic cameras are partially subject to quite different import regulations. It is crucial for them to be able to choose from as many cameras with different detector materials as possible. InfraTec has further developed the high-end series ImageIR® 8300 with detectors based on mercury cadmium telluride (MCT) and thus supports the search for a diverse range of products.

Aimed at the medium infrared wavelength range, the ImageIR® 8300 series offers an MCT detector with (640 × 512) IR pixels, which can be used as an alternative to detectors based on indium antimonide (InSb). Thanks to fundamental technical progress, the speed by which data can be recorded, transmitted and stored externally by cameras is now increasing. Whilst the infrared frame rate of the new camera model increases from 116 Hz to 151 Hz in standard mode for a full frame image, the high-speed mode allows recording, transmission and memory rates up to 232 Hz. The doubling of the previous level means an increase of 420 Hz to 828 Hz for the half frame mode (540 Hz in standard mode). This additional speed enhances the application range of the thermographic camera to include the analysis of significantly faster thermal processes typical, for example, for special applications of active thermography.

A key factor for this gain in speed is the new integrated 10 GigE interface. This has already increased the performance potential of other models in the ImageIR® series and is now being used for the first time in a camera fitted with an MCT detector. The interface allows users a transmission speed of 10 Gbit/s. Special 10 GigE transceivers combined with modern fibre optic cables ensure a direct connection between the camera and computer with a very accurate timing. It can manage this without any additional, interconnected storage medium, it is completely insensitive to electromagnetic interferences and can reach over a distance of several metres up to ten kilometres.

In addition to the speed, the camera series ImageIR® 8300 features an outstanding thermal resolution up to 20 mK. This allows the detection of even slightest temperature differences typical for most demanding applications from science and development.

The complete modular structure of the series ImageIR® has made it possible to adapt thermographic cameras to such tasks in an extremely convenient way. The concept makes retrofitting with components such as motorized focus or internal high-speed shutters easier. This also includes motorized filter and aperture wheels. They enable users to respond to material-specific emission and transmission properties of the measurement objects or to extend the temperature measuring range of the cameras.

The Intelligent Solution
InfraTec together with the University of Stuttgart research new ways for compressing thermographic measurement data

When exchanging thoughts and ideas on the latest developments in thermal image and thermographic cameras, the discussions increasingly focus on the constantly growing data volumes. It is not without reason that events such as this year's Quantitative Infrared Thermography Conference (QIRT) include topics such as data reduction during image processing on the scientific agenda. InfraTec is following these discussions actively and contribute its own ideas on a regular basis. The latest discussions concern the compression of thermographic measurement data in real time.
