Did You Know? Steve Wozniak debuted the prototype #Apple-1 at the Homebrew #Computer Club in 1976. For USD $666.66 in 1976, buyers received a single-board computer with 4K of RAM. A cassette-based BASIC programming language simplified interaction, but users had to provide their own power supply, keyboard, storage system and display to build a fully-functioning system.

Did You Know? In 1971, Ray Tomlinson chose the @ symbol to distinguish messages sent from different servers and computers. Prior to this, messages could only be sent to others on the same computer. Tomlinson, an IEEE Senior Member and electrical engineer, was trying to find ways in which humans and computers could interact. Inspired by colleagues who didn’t answer their telephones, Tomlinson began tinkering around and eventually invented what we now know as #email.

In 1962 while working at GE's research lab, IEEE Fellow Nick Holonyak Jr. invented the first visible light-emitting diode (LED). The only light emitted from LEDs at the time was infrared. Holonyak used a mixture of gallium arsenide and gallium phosphide (GaAs phosphide) to create a red glow, disproving his fellow scientists. Although LED light bulbs have only recently begun to replace incandescent bulbs, it's a step toward a more energy efficient future. How many LED bulbs do you own? @IEEExp

In December of 1947, the research of John Bardeen, William Shockley and Walter Brattain culminated in a successful semiconductor amplifier. They applied two gold contacts held in place by a plastic wedge to the surface of a small slab of germanium. In June 1948, Bell Labs publicly announced the solid-state device they called a “#transistor.”
