Sony and the Community
We wanted to take a pause and recognize some important steps occurring in the Android community. Sony recently opened up their hardware abstraction layer (HAL) and is accepting community contribution via their Github (http://goo.gl/rorwx
CyanogenMod (via Alin Jerpelea of FreeXperia fame) has had a good relationship with Sony since the CM 7 days, and this openness that they are showing is a refreshing indicator of how far Android has progressed over the last 3+ years. Sony, increasingly so, is showing that they care about Android development, not only contributing wholesale to the AOSP source, but also to the community. For that, they deserve major kudos.
This receptiveness to the community is also growing inside the AOSP source code, with +Jean-Baptiste Queru
recently starting an experiment: Adding the Sony Xperia S directly as an experimental "bleeding edge" device vendor in AOSP source, and welcoming community involvement. Our developers and maintainers have responded, and we encourage others out there to join in the effort. The device may never operate as a daily driver through pure AOSP code, but the mere existence of the project is certainly encouraging in its own right. Read more here: http://goo.gl/v1DO5
