Happy 4th of July!

Billions of these tiny wires may one day be used in common items like clothing to produce electricity simply from movement.

These nanowires of galium nitride generate electricity when deformed. Individual wires, here seen surrounding a cluster of wires in the center, are now being evaluated for optimal efficiency based on varying properties like length and diameter.

Image produced by Rodrigo Montoya, a graduate student in Professor Horacio Espinosa’s Research Group, and won 3rd place in the 2011 Science in Society - Northwestern University Image Contest
