Council Elects New President of IEI at Shimla

Mr. Sisir Kumar Banerjee, FIE, has been elected as the President of The Institution of Engineers (India) for the session 2017-2018 during the 698th Council Meeting hosted by the Himachal Pradesh State Centre on September 23, 2017 at Shimla.

The 31st Indian Engineering Congress of The Institution of Engineers (India) on the theme “SMART Technologies for Natural Resource Conservation and Sustainable Development”, was held at Hotel JW Marriott, Kolkata on December 16, 2016 and was inaugurated by Mr Keshari Nath Tripathi, Hon’ble Governor of West Bengal. In his inaugural address, Mr Tripathi stressed the need for preservation of natural resources for maintaining the ecological balance. He mentioned that engineering solutions for natural resource conservation exist in nature and we have to identify and use them for the benefit of mankind. Mr Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay, Hon’ble Minister In-charge, Department of Power and Non-conventional Energy Sources, Government of West Bengal, graced the occasion as the Guest-of-Honour and in his address praised the Engineers for their nation building activities and spoke about various advantages of smart technologies.

A Souvenir and Technical Volume of the Congress were brought out on the occasion which were released by Mr Keshari Nath Tripathi, Hon’ble Governor of West Bengal along with other dignitaries on the dais. During the Inaugural Session, various prizes and awards of the Institution, namely, IEI Industry Excellence Award, NDRF Design Awards, Safety & Quality Awards, were presented.
The Inaugural Session was followed by the ‘Glimpses of Engineering Personalities’ where eminent Engineering personalities were felicitated for their valuable contributions in the field of engineering and technology. Seven Memorial Lectures in the memory of the distinguished stalwarts of the engineering profession and four Visionary Talks were delivered by the experts in the field. Various ‘Prizes and Awards’ for the papers published during the year 2015 were presented to the recipients. Technical Sessions were conducted concurrently with the Congress where more than fifty papers embracing the theme of the Congress were presented and discussed which evoked keen interest amongst the participants. Moreover, an International Meet was organized where foreign delegates from various countries participated. IEI Alumni Meet was also organized where three members received the ‘IEI Alumni Award’. Exhibition Stalls of many reputed organizations were also put up during the Congress.

The Proceedings of the Congress was summarized in the Valedictory Session where Hon’ble Governor of Tripura, Mr Tathagata Roy, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Mr Roy, a Fellow of the Institution, spoke about his long association with IEI. On this occasion, ‘Abhiyanta Bandhu’, an annual technical magazine published in Hindi under the patronage of National Languages Promotional Committee (NLPC) of IEI along with Annual Technical Volumes of Civil, Marine & Environmental Engineering Division Boards, IEI and Interdisciplinary Coordination Committee, IEI was released.

Monthly lecture meeting 2016 was arranged by The Institution of Engineers (India), Coimbatore Local Centre, Coimbatore on 27.02.2016 (Saturday) at F-Block Hall no. 203, PSG College of Technology, Peelamedu, Coimbatore.

Er & Ar C M Dharmalingam, Chairman, welcomed the gathering and presided over the meeting. Er John Michael, Senior Member, introduced the Chief Guest to the members. The Chief Guest, Dr. K G Bhatia, Honorary Engineer - IISEE (Japan), Former President Indian Society of Earthquake Technology (ISET). Gave a Lecture on “Earthquake Effects on Buildings and Industrial Structures”

The members opined that the information given is very useful and effectively presented. The lecture meeting was concluded with vote of thanks by Er John Michael, Senior Member IE(I), Coimbatore Local Centre.

During the term 2015-17, the first Statutory Day ‘National Energy Conservation Day’ Scheduled on 14th December 2015 was celebrated as Lecture Series on this topic of great National and International important.
The Lecture Series was organized on 14th December, 2015 at Training & Placement Hall of M.J.P.R. University, Bareilly. A galaxy of speaker was present to express their views, as listed below:

Prof. S. S. Bedi, MJPR University, Bareilly was the keynote speaker for the celebration. Prof. A. K. Gupta, Dean MJPR University, Bareilly has very kindly concreted to present concluding words at the end the Lecture series.
The programme started with the inaugural words by the Chairman of IE (I), Bareilly Local Centre Er. Prem Prakash Gupta.
It was followed by presentation by different speakers. Prof. S.S. Bedi, MJPR University, Bareilly presented a wide spectrum of suggestion for Energy Conservation and linked with the need of associating with the nature, some of the speakers mention that the concept of Conservation of Energy was observed great important in ancient India. Some interesting example were also quoted one of the speakers emphasize on the Enervation of depleting source of Energy Generation and put before the house an important untapped source. Speaker Er. K. C. Agarwal expressed views about insulation of new buildings during construction (floor, wall, slaps, water pipe etc.) to save the energy.

All the imminent speakers were awarded by Bareilly Local Centre.
After the informative concluding words by Prof. A. K. Gupta, Dean, MJPR University, Honorary Secretary of IE (I), Bareilly Local Centre Er. A.K. Agarwal, thanked all the speakers, for participation and organizer.

National Energy Conservation Day to be celebrated on 14th December,2015 has been celebrated on Sunday, the 10th January 2016 at Asansol Engineering College premises, Asansol, along with annual family get-together, from 10.00 AM onwards by IEI Asansol Local Centre. All the members with families, student chapter members and invitees numbering more than 210 participated in the above function. Er. G. Viswanadham, FIE and Chairman of IEI, ALC chaired the session. Dr. M. G. Tiary, MIE and Hony. Secretaryof IEI, ALC welcomed the invitees and members with their family members and briefed the audience regarding Energy Conservation Day. Er. G. Viswanadham, FIE and Chairman of IEI, ALC addressed the audience about Energy Conservation. The chief Guest of the occasion was Er. A. K. Rath, ED (Project), SAIL- ISP. Apart from that Professors and IEI students’ committee members of Asansol Enginering College attended the programme.

A model presentation and demonstration on Energy Saving was presented by students of Asansol Engineering College. Six teams participated in this model presentation. Sit and draw competition for children were also arranged by Er. Debasish Sarkar and a fun game, City Bombay were conducted by Er. K. V. R. Raju among the family members in the open lawn. Mr. Sambit Pal and Mr. Sumit Karmakar along with some other members of students chapter of Asansol Engineering College were engaged to take the family members for campus visit of the college .The function was concluded with prize and gift distribution by Er. R.N.Das, Er. A. K. Rath, Er. G. Viswanadham and Dr. M.G Tiary to various participants and speakers along with serving Lunch.

The Institution of Engineers (India), Ahmednagar Local Centre, in association with Larsen & Toubro Ltd and Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj College of Engineering, Ahmednagar, organised two-day Science Exhibition on the occasion of National Science Day, on 27th and 28th February 2016 at the premises of Ashokbhau Firodia English Medium School, Ahmednagar.

The Exhibition was inaugurated on 27th Feb 2016 @ 09:30 hours at the hands of Smt. Chhaya Firodia, Secretary General, Ahmednagar Education Society, in the presence of Principal Dr R S Deshpande, amongst other dignitaries. In her inaugural address, Smt. Chhaya Firodia expressed the necessity of such exhibitions for generating curiosity among students and parents. She opined that this Exhibition will enlighten the students on various principles of science and know about inventions by Scientists. Er A P Pargaonkar, Chairman, expressed that technology is rapidly developing and appealed that students should thoroughly study the scientific inventions, which will help enhancing their knowledge. Dr R S Deshpande, Guest of Honour, highlighted the importance of science. Citing an example of Sir Thomas Alva Edison, who he said, had more than 1200 patents on his name, and had applied for last patent at the age of 82 years, advised students to have perseverance in developing their knowledge. Earlier, Er H B Thigale, Hon. Secretary, welcomed the guests and highlighted the purpose of organising this Exhibition. He also gave brief introduction of the Institution and the activities being carried out by it. Er D A Vidhate, Jt Hon. Secretary anchored the programme.
During the two-day exhibition, L & T sponsored “Science on Wheel” lab of M/s Agastya Foundation displayed more than fifty science equipment in the Exhibition. Students of SCSM College of Engg displayed more than twenty innovative projects based on solar energy, wind energy, wireless irrigation pumps, solar energy based irrigation pumps, mileage-efficient motorcycle, and various electronic equipment developed by students. Dolphin Labs, Pune also participated in the exhibition and displayed quad-copter, blue tooth controlled robot which were main attraction of students. “Jidnyasa” institute displayed models of telescope and microscope.

Students of Government Polytechnic, Ahmednagar were trained for exhibiting the equipment and providing relevant information to the visitors. More than one thousand students, parents, teachers and general public visited the Exhibition. The concluding session was attended by Chairman Er A P Pargaonkar, Dr R S Deshpande and Hon. Secretary Er H B Thigale
