How to get full points on the PADI Mask Removal and Replacement IDC Briefing, while briefing it as realistic as possible - http://www.idckohtaothailand.com

During the PADI IDC course a Diving Instructor Candidate needs to perform at least 4 confined water presentations, which means at least 4 PADI confined water diving skills.

To get full points on these PADI IDC Confined Water Presentations the IDC candidate needs to get a total of 25 points on 5 criteria to get a full 5.0 score on their IDC confined water presentation. These are the criteria's:

Briefing Criteria
Demonstration Criteria
Problem Solving Criteria
Control and Delivery Criteria
Debriefing Criteria

PADI Examiners on the PADI IE need to hear a few points in the briefing of the PADI Mask Removal and Replacement IDC Skill to be able to give the maximum 5.0 score for this IDC briefing criteria and the order on the PADI IDC Confined Water Presentation Slate is as follows:

Objective:

Explain the objective of the PADI Mask Removal and Replacement IDC Skill written in the PADI Instructor Manual and the PADI Confined Performance Requirements Slates from your PADI IDC Crewpack.

Value:

Give a reason why the PADI Mask Removal and Replacement IDC Skill is important to learn.

Description:

Explain the PADI Mask Removal and Replacement IDC Skill in detail.

Signals:

Give a few diving signals related to the PADI Mask Removal and Replacement IDC Skill.

Organisation:

Explain where and how to perform the PADI Mask Removal and Replacement IDC Skill.

In this YouTube video I have changed the order of the briefing to increase realism as you will find out that giving the PADI Mask Removal and Replacement IDC Skill in the order of the PADI Confined Water Presentation Slate will feel a bit robotic. I have talked to many PADI Examiners and all say that you can change the order in the briefing if the message comes over clearly and if the IDC candidate feels more comfortable with it.

A few recommendations to make the briefing realistic, but not go out of scope on a PADI IDC course:

To make sure 100% the objective is ok, I recommend to say it word for word from the PADI Instructor Manual. You can memorise it for increase of realism or use the PADI confined water performance requirement slates.

Try to make the value as positive as possible, if not then try to at least not scare the students.

During the organisation you can explain a bit about the PADI Mask Removal and Replacement IDC Skill demonstration, as this is really important in real life, but be a bit careful on an IDC not to take to much time.

Please do give the signal of the PADI Mask Removal and Replacement IDC Skill, but you don't have to say more signals if you integrate them in the PADI Mask Removal and Replacement IDC Skill description or if it is a surface diving skill you can just talk to the students.

The PADI Panic Diver Out of Air Skill is a very important PADI Rescue skill to learn as some divers that run out of air panic underwater which can lead to uncontrolled ascents. The PADI Panic Diver Underwater Approach is a very important PADI Rescue skill that you can use to handle a panic diver at the surface. The Panic Diver Underwater Approach skill is also a Rescue skill that can be practiced during the PADI IDC course and the PADI IE Instructor Examination - http://www.idckohtaothailand.com

Many panic divers at the surface are not listening or paying attention. They just want to get buoyant. For this reason they might grab you to stay buoyant on approach. The Panic Diver Underwater Approach is a great technique to use to avoid a struggle with the panic diver.

How to perform the PADI Panic Diver Underwater Approach Skill correctly:

1. Have one diver be the panicked diver at the surface
2. The rescue diver can now start with asking if the diver is ok and to inflate the BCD and drop the weight belt
3. If the panic diver is not responding then the rescue diver can deflate the BCD and make an underwater approach.
4. Upon surfacing make sure you keep the panic diver at the surface, then inflate the panic diver first, then yourself and then drop both weight belts to become positively buoyant.

Sairee Cottage Diving on Koh Tao in Thailand teaches this skill multiple times over and this is also a PADI Rescue skill that can come up on the PADI IE (Instructor Examination).

The PADI Surfacing Unresponsive Diver Skill is a very important PADI Rescue skill to learn in the unlikely event you encounter an unresponsive diver underwater. You can then use the PADI Surfacing Unresponsive Diver skill to bring the unresponsive diver to the surface in a controlled manner. The Surfacing the Unresponsive Diver skill is also a populair Rescue skill during the PADI IDC course and the PADI IE Instructor Examination - http://www.idckohtaothailand.com

As a PADI Divemaster you will lead fun divers or assist PADI Open Water Diver courses. As a PADI Diving Instructor you will teach brand new Open Water Divers. This is truly one of the best jobs in the world, but it might happen that you encounter a diver that is unresponsive underwater.

How to perform the PADI Surfacing the Unresponsive Diver Skill correctly:

1. One diver lay's unresponsive on the bottom
2. Swim up to the unresponsive diver and check is he is responsive
3. If not, then deflate your BCD and cradle your knees around the unresponsive divers scuba tank
4. Have your right hand under his or her arm and open the airway while holding the unresponsive diver's regulator's second stage in place
5. With your left hand use the unresponsive diver's LPI to control the ascent slowly to the surface
6. At the surface fully inflate the unresponsive diver, inflate yourself and remove the weight belt or/and integrated weights to become positively buoyant

Sairee Cottage Diving on Koh Tao in Thailand teaches this skill multiple times over and this is also a PADI Rescue skill that can come up on the PADI IE (Instructor Examination).

There are more PADI IDC Rescue Diver skills that PADI Platinum Course Director Marcel van den Berg teaches at Sairee Cottage Diving on Koh Tao in Thailand. Please check out this other YouTube video here: https://youtu.be/uB6L443eK4s

What is important to understand is that there are many different ways to perform these skills and I understand if there are diving instructors or Divemasters that think you should perform the rescue skills differently. This YouTube video is not designed to show the best way, it's shows an easy way to retain the steps, get the highest IDC/IE points and indicates a great way for real life teaching, depending on the dive instructors opinion, teaching style, conditions and PADI Rescue, IDC or Divemaster students.

This is the PADI objective from the PADI Instructor Manual:

Exercise 6 – Surfacing the Unresponsive Diver

Bring an unresponsive diver to the surface using
buoyancy control of either the unresponsive diver or the
rescuer.

PADI Platinum Course Director Marcel van den Berg at Sairee Cottage Diving on Koh Tao in Thailand created a PADI DMT and IDC course that surpasses the minimum PADI standards to ensure the highest quality and chance of your success. Together with IDC Staff Instructors he will teach you a PADI Divemaster course where you have to assist extra PADI Rescue courses to make sure your IDC will be easier to successfully complete.

The PADI Panic Diver Bolting Underwater Skill is a very important PADI Rescue skill to learn because it can happen that you have to deal with panic diving students or maybe fun divers. This is also a populair Rescue skill during the PDI IDC course and the PADI IE Instructor Examination - http://www.idckohtaothailand.com

As a PADI Divemaster you will lead fun divers or assist PADI Open Water Diver courses. As a PADI Diving Instructor you will teach brand new Open Water Divers. This is truly one of the best jobs in the world, but sometimes your fun diver or diving students might get nervous or panicked under the water. This can happen for the following reasons:

-Being afraid of closed or open spaces
-Breathing the wrong way
-Strong current
-Hypercapnia
-Scarred or nervous
-Bad maintained scuba diving equipment
-Bad or to clear visibility

If handled the correct way, panic divers that are bolting to the surface can be controlled and calmed down quite quick before the situation escalates. If not handled correctly or within a certain timeframe then it can result in a uncontrolled panic diver with much severe end results.

For this reason at Sairee Cottage Diving on Koh Tao in Thailand we teach this skill multiple times over and this is also a PADI Rescue skill that can come up on the PADI IE (Instructor Examination).
