Can't believe how quickly Docker has taken off. Champing at the bit to put this into a production environment.

I’ve always had a love/hate relationship with Bluetooth. When it first came out in the nineties it looked like it would end the tangle of cables on my desktop, but the reality has fallen short.  Apple have embraced Bluetooth for … Continue reading →

Hah! A funny, and at the same time informative, dig at rational (actually irrational) metric paper sizes vs crazy arse American standard paper sizes.
Matt Parker (self-proclaimed "Stand up mathematician") talks about paper sizes - both waxing lyrical over the mathematical properties of the A series with their sqrt(2) length:width ratio, and expressing bemusement at the common US paper sizes (letter, legal, tabloid etc.) - while also briefly touching on the derivation of the measurement units (metres, inches).

Bonus points if you spot the artist's misinterpretation of square metre...

Just Another Day of Mass Murder
So, thirteen more people are mown down in the US by a high powered weapon and the discussion is all about:

1) Did he use an AR-15 assault rifle.
2) Did he have a mental illness.

Because getting answers to questions like that will ensure it never happens again, won't it. No one dares to even talk about the real elephant in the room.

Twenty school children were blown away only nine months ago and after all the wailing and despair has died down, the effect was.... nothing. Zilch. Zero.

If that didn't change anything, what would it take for people to say Something Has To Be Done and mean it? Perhaps if a gunman went nuts at the Academy Awards and took out all the beautiful people (who everyone thinks they care about) instead of random strangers (who you can pretend you don't care about).

I've never had much time for John Howard, but at least he had the balls to do the right thing when it happened here. Do you think a Conservative leader would do it today? With the rise of redneck, "Hunter and Shooter" pressure groups across the country, I doubt it.

Assembling Bohemian Rhapsody

Nice. Brian May "musician, singer, songwriter, astrophysicist" and lead guitarist from Queen picks over the elements of the original 2" multitrack of Bohemian Rhapsody and explains how they put it all together. Hearing all the elements separately really makes you appreciate the end product.

There wasn't one note that didn't sound intimately familiar even in this raw form so I've obviously heard this track w-a-a-y too many times.

It's still likely to stop me dead in my tracks to listen to it all the way through. Priscilla and I even had a head banging moment coming home in the car the other day a la Wayne's World. Not sure what the other people at the traffic lights thought.

Nothing deep going on here, just some really fun, somewhat tongue in cheek 70's rock. Thanks Freddie.

Watching TV Fries Kid's Brains

I was accidentally exposed to more than a minute of commercial TV the other day and I'm still recovering, so it's no surprise that toddler's malleable minds are mangled by TV.

It seems to be an accelerating spiral to the bottom. As broadcast TV becomes irrelevant, the networks have to pump out cheaper and cheaper dross peppered with ads just to survive.

We now have at least two or three "shopping" channels where they stopped pretending it wasn't about the ads and spew a barrage of hucksters, quacks and loud, fast talking hawkers selling stuff you don't need.

[...shudder...] Quick! Where's the remote....?

Whew! That was close. Got away with only a faint waft of smoke from a few scorched brain cells, and a slight sense of despair for the future of humanity.
