I finally found another good opportunity to photograph snowy owls.  Even thought the light was not very cooperative this time she was in flight.  Wow, in flight pictures are a whole new learning curve.  I managed to get a few in focus.

I would definitely recommend a bird of prey centre if you want some practice. We can take all the equipment off our birds so they look like wild birds. Then we can get them to land in the same place over and over again. So you get plenty of chances. It is great for trying different camera set ups and lenses a swell as getting your eye in for speed of flight etc. then when you get a good one you can tell all your friends you camped out for days just to get that one shot :0) club together with a few friends and it's a good relatively cheap day out.

Just making a private post public...

Way back in June 2011 my daughter, son and one his friends went with me to see the Duke and  Duchess of Cambridge in Ottawa.  We were there pretty early and about four people back from the barrier.  My daughter, who was not quite 13 was having difficulty seeing so a couple of nice ladies who had a spot at the front squeezed her in.  She got to shake the Prince's hand.

On a foggy and cold morning a couple of Saturdays ago I was out looking for Snowy owls.  Given the fog we were having no luck.  But the fog freezing on the tress, fences and cat tails etc. gave us other opportunities.

As the fog cleared I spotted this tree.  Not even half an hour later the sun had melted most of the frost off.

Another shot from the recent RA Photo club outing (http://www.raphotoclub.ca).  As we were watching her she stopped to scratch her head.  I let the high speed shutter go.  Most just looked odd only one shot conveyed what she was doing in a still  - this one.

From an RA Photo club (http://www.raphotoclub.ca) outing the weekend before last to St. Isidore. We started out in the fog unable to see much of anything.  I did get some nice fog pictures and some interesting trees.  Just when we were about to pack up and head back someone spotted a Snowy owl.  This female was sitting on top of a pile of rocks in the middle of a field.

Thanks +Nathan Beaulne

Funny thing about scenery - as you no doubt now - it s all about the angle.  To the bird's right (off camera left) is a couple of big ugly cinder blocks.  Behind the pile she is sitting on is a barn and silo.  When I first started taking pictures I was shooting past the cinder blocks so could not get rid of them but I did go down low to put the sky behind her.  Over the next half hour or so I worked my way around the pile to get a view that did not include those bricks.  I am glad she could care less about us.  Apparently she was a very relaxed owl and tolerated about 20 of us for a long time.  We left before she did.

We are have a large number of owls around us right now - most in the last 10 years and I have still only managed to see three of them and get pictures of this one.  I hope I can get more before this winter is done.

GPC Labworks is my "local" lab. I have had many prints done there from small 4x6s to 12x18 (they do bigger but 12x18 is the biggest I have gone). Nice people and great service - they have even done stuff while I waited when they were not too busy. I highly recommend them.

We were there in April and had a really good time. The butterflies are amazing. I had a great time and so did the kids (teens). We spent a long time and walked slowly. The price of admission was high though. I would have liked to see it priced a bit lower and put it in the price range that you could go two times during your visit because I would have if it were less expensive.

Very helpful and knowledgeable staff. I have purchased a camera, lens, tripods, camera bags and a scanner there. Their new location is nice and bright and well organized. I made the switch to digital last year but previous to that they ordered me film as I needed it. And don't for get about rentals - they are a good source for many things. I have rented lenses from them on several occasions. The rental experience was good too - flawless.
