Geek with a passion for emerging grass-roots disruption
Introduction
Ian Forrester is a well known and likeable character on the digital scene in the UK. He has now made Manchester, UK his home, where he works for the BBC's R&D north lab. He focuses on open innovation and new disruptive opportunities via open engagement and collaborations with startups, early adopters and hackers.

His current research is into the area of Future Narrative and Storytelling, with a technology he calls Perceptive Media. A new kind method of broadcasting, which pairs the best of broadcast with the best of the internet to create an experience like sitting around a camp fire telling stories. Interestingly this also crosses over into internet of things too.

A non-traditional background into interaction design which he has crossed over with development using XML & Semantic web technologies. He tends to live a few years in the future, and has a excellent eye for spotting the crossover opportunities of open technologies and business models. By watching what hackers and early adopters are doing to scratch their own itches now. Something he did successfully as the leader for BBC Backstage for 4 years.

Previously a founder of the dataportability.org group, social geek events, including London Geekdinners, BarCampLondon, Hackday, Mashed, Edinburgh TV Un-Festival and Over the Air. Ian has a proven track record for making the unthinkable happen.

I visited Apreo many years ago and loved feel for the place then, but visiting today I was very impressed to see the modern touches have made this resturant bar even better than I remember. Great food, not overpriced for Kensington and some excellent recommended cocktails. Staff are friendly but firm, this is not like the hotel bars you may have visited before.

Small spanish tapas style place, which triples in space on a warm evening. Service was slower than I had liked but the food was very reasonable for Kensington. Certainly the kind of place you bring friends for a good healthy meal and a good natter over wine.

Nice place in the sun. Only stopped for a late lunch bit over priced for what we had. Fish and chips nice but at over 10 pounds I was expecting wow. Deli platter was lacking a lot although nice too. Service was good but over priced

Takk is a tea/coffee shop very much like others in the northern quarter but its the new upstart on the scene. Lots of space and different types of configurations for those just wanting to sit and read or plug in and get down with some code edited. With time its going to be a great coffee shop but right now it closes a little early and the lunch selection could be larger. However, the coffee is strong and unique tasting. The amount of space is incredible and the place always feels airy. Staff are friendly and look out for this place to grow and grow in the future.

Teacup use to be the king of tea rooms in the northern quarter. It changed a while ago to include a more formal style of sitting. It sits somewhere between a proper tearoom and the new style of coffee shops. Its a nice clean place and I prefer it to some of the other overly formal tea rooms. The staff are friendly, food is good and tea selection is good. Nice balance between formal and informal. I could easily take friends and family from out of town here and know they will enjoy it as much as myself.

North tea power is everything I love about the northern quarter. Relaxed tea/coffee house which is open most of the day, serves hot beverages and alcohol for those wanting something a little stiffer. Its welcoming to those who just want to sit, read, type up a new blog or even work on a new startup idea. The owners and staff are super friendly and can always help if you're not sure. The space in the shop is full of different types of seating, I'm a fan of the big table. There is even outdoor space for those who enjoy a smoke with their coffee. The Tea and Coffee is wonderful, care and attention paid to every aspect of the hot beverage making. Food is perfect lunch-time stuff with a bunch of cakes for those who need a sugar top up. North tea power is a must!
