RIP Yahoo

Say hello to a comeback for AOhelL

Seems like the deal for Yahoo to be bought by Verizon has finally gone through.

Assuming that this report is accurate then it will be merged with AOL under the leadership of the latter company. Still, the head of Yahoo will be OK if she gets shown the door and leaves with a $57million payout
In amassing Yahoo, AOL and other online services, Verizon is preparing for the day when its most important clients are advertisers, not users.

+Ian Dixon Do you really think Marissa can squeeze by on $57 million?

I'll be long gone by the time Hinkley C is finished

So I'm not really bothered that it will add £25 a year to electricity at current prices

Might matter to my kids and any kids they have though
Has the amount that bill payers would have to pay for the new Hinkley Point C risen sharply?

Another statistic that has been mentioned in the last few days, are the 25,000 jobs that will be created for the construction of Hinkley Point C.

Well, what if that level of investment was going into wind and solar? Wouldn't that also create a lot of jobs and not just in Hinkley, but across the nation?

Meet the latest Cabinet appointee

Gladstone joins Larry and Palmerston in the government feline ranks.

He refused to express a view on Brexit.
A third cat joins the Whitehall mouse patrol with the arrival of Gladstone at the Treasury.

More devolution for London?

So thinks Mayor Sadiq Khan in the wake of the brexit vote. Ignores the rest of the country though.
According to a BBC report, London Mayor Sadiq Khan has said “nothing should be ruled out” to “protect jobs and growth from the economic uncertainty ahead” in the capital, following the UK’s vote to leave the EU. Note the words in the capital where something like 13% of the total… Continue reading

So I got annoyed this morning

And, when I get annoyed, I do rash things on my websites like completely changing the Wordpress theme. So that is what I did today.

It started out because I changed the PHP version on my webhosting from 5.3 to 7 following a comment from a 'guru' that the newer version is 'twice as fast'

Absolutely no difference in speed on several sites but the change completely broke one. I do so like it when I get 'Server returned error 500' messages displayed.

So I switched the site that was causing problems to the same theme as the others. Took several hours but I got a bonus because I wrote notes as I went along. That will save me a lot of time when I next set up the same theme. It will also be useful content to use on the website that I was changing.

It didn't solve the 500 error with PHP7 though.

The problem is almost certainly being caused by one of the plugins that I installed and might even be using. I basically have something that is running PHP4 code which would work in PHP5 but support has been dropped in PHP7.

A tedious task ahead but it will have to be done sooner rather than later.

Steak Pie, Chips, Peas and Carrots

One from the old Transport Cafe days
This Steak Pie, Chips, Peas and Carrots is one of those British dishes commonly found in the old Transport Cafe that predated motorway service areas

+Ian Dixon Good thing we included the carrots! Otherwise, "steak pie, chips and peas" rearranges to spell "a cheap, adept spikiness". Not nearly so inviting. (But still cheap.)

Six tips for social media

I resisted the temptation to use woulds like 'best' or 'top ' as many have a habit of doing.

Just six things that I personally do in social media and I think others should as well
It could have used the word 'top' or 'best' like many do but this is instead just 'Six tips for social media'. They might be the best. Up to you to decide.

Sausage Ring, Potatoes, Peas, Carrots, Gravy
Sausage Ring, Potatoes, Peas, Carrots and Gravy made for a great dinner that was easy to cook. Filling as it stands but many ways to add more.

The decline in UK real wages since the pre-crisis peak is the most severe in the OECD, equal only to Greece. Both countries saw declines of 10.4% per cent between 2007 Q4 and 2015Q4. Apart from Portugal, all other OECD countries saw real wage increases, albeit mostly modest ones. (NB strictly the Greek decline is 10.41%…

Work
Occupation
Business Consultant, Author, Recipe writer and Computer Programmer
Skills
One of my main skills is an ability to nudge people in the right direction. I may know part of the answer to the question that they ask so I will respond with what I do know. That then gives the person asking the question something to think on and research further. They then find the answer that they need and learn in the process. Sometimes I will even give a partial answer so people asking have to look further for themselves. That is the way to learn
