Stop Being a Robot on Social Media!

It is so easy to become a robot on social media. There are so many cool tools and systems to set up which aim to make our lives easier and more productive. But have you ever stopped to think and look how all this automation makes you appear?
Automated direct messages, automated thank you replies, automatic mentions, and more.

In this article, I look into authenticity on the social web and I'd love to know what you think.

How honest can you be online? How honest should you be? Is transparency a good thing? How about authenticity? Is honesty and transparency the same thing? How do these come into play when you are marketing your business?
Daniel Imbellino's profile photo
I can only agree. Even Twitter is starting to feel like a giant automated network these days. You follow somebody and get an automated welcome, DM, etc. It's just getting old, and  when it happens I simply ignore these types of messages. People want to engage with people, not automated programs.

The problem is, everyone wants to do more with less. They don't want to put muscle into their work, and want programs to do everything for them. Too bad its never going to happen. Automated programs will never be a replacement for real human engagement.

By the way, great to connect with you +Ian Anderson Gray . Have you thought of posting some of this content to Strategic Social Networking community: . Our members love these types insightful posts.

I don't normally include guest posts on my blog, but +Jason Quey  writes the kind of articles I love! He likes to go deep and this article is no exception. Been going well - haven't blogged much, partly b/c there's a lot of junk on influencer marketing and hesitant to share unproven strategies.

But, praise God for the work He's provided and success through that!

Why Hootsuite's Billing System is Broken

I think there are many good things about +Hootsuite but I have to say their billing system is NOT one of them.

I've had a Hootsuite account for years, and I've had both a free and a pro account. I wrote 2 very popular articles on the advantages and disadvantages of Hootsuite and I try and keep them up to date as much as possible.

Recently Hootsuite have updated their prices for teams, and so I wanted to investigate and update my blog post. It used to be possible to see a list of the prices, but now it seems Hootsuite are making it much more difficult to find out.

In trying to look at the prices, it seems Hootsuite upgraded me from the free plan to the pro one. As soon as I realised that, I immediately downgraded. I thought nothing more, until this invoice came into my inbox. OK, it's not a lot of money, but that isn't the point!

Looking further into this, when you investigate into the pricing, Hootsuite give you a browser alert box saying that you will be upgraded to pro. It's quite misleading and not clear. It's then quite tricky to downgrade.

I had a similar issue some months back, and it was a real pain to be able to downgrade and get a refund. I now fear I am going to have to go through the same process.

I find it frustrating when tools and services try and hide their prices. Of course they are perfectly at liberty to do so, but it does leave a bad taste in the mouth.

I have nothing against Hootsuite and I've continued to recommend it to people in certain situations, but I'll have to warn them about their billing system.

Anyone else had similar experiences?

Be More Effective and Share your Social Tasks with your Team

I had the pleasure of writing another article for +Friends+Me in a series of how to use the tool. After an introduction to the basics, we then delved into more detail and explained how you could become a power user. Today, I explain how you could use Friends+Me within your team.

Friends+Me is a social media management tool which allows you to selectively and intelligently cross post to a plethora of networks including Twitter, Facebook (profiles and pages), LinkedIn (profiles and pages),, Tumblr, Google+ (profiles, pages, communities and collections) and Pinterest (coming soon).

Now, you might not have a team as such- you may be an individual. However the team feature of Friends+Me can still be useful. I have to thank +martin shervington and +Chris Ducker for showing me the virtues of outsourcing certain tasks to Virtual Assistants (although they may not know they were an influence). I've not embraced VAs in a big way quite yet, but I have dipped my toe in the VA waters and it has been a big game changer for me.

So, if you wanted to share the load with a team (and that can include VAs) then Friends+Me could help. Imagine being able to easily share your content across all your networks- all from one tool and without compromising on security! Sounds like a winner to me!

Hi +Dustin W. Stout, +Nicholas Cardot and +Jason T. Wiser

I continue to recommend the Social Warfare plugin to people. It really is the best social sharing plugin out there IMHO, but that's not exactly news for you guys.

I wondered if there was a place where you share your thoughts and ideas for the future development of the product? Have you ever thought about a public Trello board? That would be cool!

I've been meaning to share some thoughts and ideas with you guys and ask some questions. When you get the chance, let me know what you think.

Social Snippet Sharing
Not really sure what to call this. You make it easy to share links to the page with different social networks- each with an image, link and text. However, I am trying to make it easier for people to share different parts of my article. The click to tweet option is great, but how about sharing to other networks such as Facebook and particularly Pinterest? Is that even a good idea? Have you seen this new tool called Missing Lettr? It's quite an interesting tool (which unfortunately is currently Twitter only) which sets up a schedule for your new potentially Evergreen content and it extracts different images and sections from your posts and shares them over time. I love the idea.

Add hidden Pinterest image to top of article
The Pinterest optimized image feature in SW is awesome, but what if people use the standard Pinterest button? The Pinterest optimized image will not be seen. It would be good to have an option for SW to add the Pinterest optimized image at the top of the article but hidden to the visitor (so Pinterest can see it but the visitor can't)

Embed images in Twitter automatically
I am not sure if this is still the case, but it's a real pain to embed images in the Twitter share option. I've had to manually post the tweet and add the image in Twitter. Then grab the embed code and get the url of the Twitter image. It must be possible for SW to do this automatically? Buffer allows you to post new images for example. Maybe SW could send a tweet out with the image, then grab the image for next time? Just a thought?

Other plugins?
Are you guys working on other plugins? At the moment I am very frustrated by commenting plugins. There is no perfect solution. I recently moved from Disqus to Postmatic (with the Epoch plugin to make it look like Disqus). I won't add all my thoughts here, but I've looked through all the options and there are disadvantages in all. Happy to give you my thoughts if you are interested.

Thanks for listening!

+Dustin W. Stout thanks for getting back to me yesterday. I expected you had an ambitious roadmap and I understand the balance between wanting to publish part of this whilst letting some areas come as a surprise - particularly from a marketing standpoint. Glad my thoughts helped.

Do you want to make it easier to share to all your networks? Friends+Me helps!
I'm having another play with the Friends+Me Chrome extension and it's great the way you can share an article to almost all networks out there really easily. For example, I am currently sharing this to my Google+ profile (very few tools allow this by the way), my Facebook page, LinkedIn and Pinterest!
The main Friends+Me basically converts Google+ into a powerful social media management tool, but using the chrome extension means you don't even need to use Google+!
The right cross-promotion and content scheduling solution for you. Increase user engagement across all your social networks. Publish Once, Share to ANYWHERE.

Speaking on social media tools at Babelcamp in the Czech Republic

Just finished speaking on social media tools to boost your business in a noisy world.

I mentioned +Friends+Me in the tool line up, but I hadn't realised until the other day that +Alois Bělaška (the creator of the tool) was going to be here. Really enjoyed spending time with him.

The food here is amazing, and the talks really engaging. I particularly enjoyed talks by +Mojca Marš and +Grzegorz Mogilewski
