Exactly 85 years after Clyde Tombaugh's historic discovery of Pluto, the NASA spacecraft set to encounter the icy planet this summer is providing its first views of the small moons orbiting Pluto. The moons Nix and Hydra are visible in a series of images taken by the New Horizons spacecraft from ...

AMAZING. Filmmaker Paul Parker added ‘echo’ effect to video to visualize birds' flight paths.
Videographer Paul Parker used the 'echo' effect in video editing software After Effects to show the flight paths of birds near his home in Cornwall, England. Parker also filmed birds flying past his window for an hour and compressed it into just a few seconds to show what it would look

Deep sky imaging  -

For those interested in trying astrophoto without a DSLR, this is a decent result I got yesterday evening using a Canon PowerShot camera under heavily light polluted sky

Trying to see how far I could push my old SX40 HS bridge camera. This image of M42 was obtained stacking 25 images, 16 seconds exposure each, at 800 ISO. CHDK firmware used to enable RAW format, ISO > 100 on long exposures and intervalometer script. Stacking, background subtraction, maximum entropy deconvolution done with MaxIM DL and final tuning with Photoshop. Despite of the high light pollution some nice details are visible.

This map of Europa employs 190 images from NASA's Galileo spacecraft and 14 images from NASA's Voyager 2 spacecraft that have been color-matched to produce as seamless a global map as practicable with current data sets. Warning: the fully enlarged version is 20,000 by 10,000 pixels and about 30 Megabytes; some browsers may not display it.

Is this real? How come we've never seen cloud photos from Mars before?

Astronomers from the US, Europe, Chile and South Africa have determined that 70,000 years ago a recently discovered dim star is likely to have passed through the solar system's distant cloud of comets, the Oort Cloud. No other star is known to have ever approached our solar system this close -- five times closer than the current closest star, Proxima Centauri. They analyzed the velocity and trajectory of a low-mass star system nicknamed "Scholz's...
