On 6th April 2017, Dr. Shubhajit Roy Chowdhury, Assistant Professor at IIT Mandi, delivered a seminar on Non-invasive diagnosis at the point of care”. He is a senior member at IEEE and the VLSI society, and has received several prestigious awards like The Young Engineer’s Award. He talked of the differences in the medical diagnosis procedures - non-invasive and invasive, and difficulties associated with them. Invasive procedures are painful and also need expert supervision to avoid the risk of associated infections. Extensive research over the years has led to great advancement in field of non-invasive medical diagnosis, like PET, MRI and CT scans. But here also, there is a requirement of expert intervention like that of radiologists.
State of the art approaches have some problems associated with them, like high costs and regular attendance for the healthcare facility. To curb them, he talked of how we can develop hand-held devices which are small and will gradually replace the costly devices found in pathological centres. The development of such devices and technology can prove to be a good boost for cheaper and affordable medicines being produced for the next generation.
The talk concluded with an overlook into case studies of patients who suffered due to late scans, and how we need to develop rapid and portable methods of scans and diagnosis, specially in case of traumatic injuries. The talk was peppered with eager questions about Dr. Chowdhury’s research examples.

Today’s talk in the Computational Biology Seminar series was given by Dr. Lipi Thukral, Senior Scientist, CSIR-IGIB, on “Diversity of Biomolecular Interactions”. Dr. Thukral talked about the influence of biomolecular interactions on cellular architecture and behaviour and how changes at the atomic level can effect changes at the protein interaction level. She presented the results of her work on simulation of ligand-receptor interactions in the MC1R signaling pathway which is responsible for the pigmentation of skin and hair that plays a major part in skin tumor susceptibility. Dr. Thukral also discussed her current projects: topological changes in APOA1 protein on binding with free cholesterol, and interaction of proteins and membrane lipids in bacterial cell membrane.

The talk introduced the students to an interesting domain in Computational Biology and was interspersed with insightful questions from the faculty.

The seminar on 30 March titled “Real Time Traffic Congestion Dashboards for Decision Makers” was delivered by Dr. Darcy Bullock, Professor of Civil Engineering at Purdue University. A B. S. in Civil Engineering graduate from University of Vermont and a PhD in Civil Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University, Dr Darcy’s talk was based upon traffic incidents, work zones and winter having a large impact on both mobility and safety nationwide.
Dr Bullock presented a series of case studies derived from after action analysis of major traffic crashes and winter storms. Director at the Joint Transportation Research Program, Dr Bullock’s talk started with crowd-sourced probe vehicle data providing an outcome oriented measure that can be used to calculate the impact on traffic of storms in near-real time as well as in after action review.
The talk witnessed an enthusiastic audience with a curiosity for understanding how recorded audio and transcripts from public safety and traffic management radio dispatch system affect the traffic congestion.
