The Internet of Things and the consulting-specifying engineer
What considerations should a consulting specifying engineer make for the demands of scale? And should a smart building be its own Intranet of Things, or should it be connected to the larger Internet of Things? By Robert S. Fish, PhD, IEEE http://bit.ly/1R5rhOD

IEEE/ANSI C63.7™-2015 — This guide provides information that is useful in constructing an Open-Area Test Site (OATS) used to perform radiated emission measurements in the frequency range of 30-1000 MHz. Final validity of the test site can only be made by performing site attenuation measurements as described in ANSI C63.4-2003, Sec 5.4.6. http://bit.ly/1GZjDxq

IEEE C57.153™-2015: The purpose of this guide is to provide power transformer paralleling users with an easily accessible source for comparing control methods for transformer paralleling.

The control methods include: master/follower, circulating current, power factor, circulating reactive current, and negative reactance methods. This guide presents operating philosophy descriptions, sample wiring diagrams, typical operational variations, the provision of adequate backup protection, and typical misapplication consequences. http://bit.ly/1IhU90t

Interconnection equipment that connects distributed resources (DR) to an electric power system (EPS) must meet the requirements specified in IEEE 1547.

Standardized test procedures are necessary to establish and verify compliance with those requirements, so this IEEE P1547.1a Amendment 1 establishes test regimens to verify interconnection systems conformance to IEEE 1547 Amendment 1 for voltage regulation, and response to area EPS abnormal conditions of voltage and frequency. http://bit.ly/19ZefZ7

India, as elsewhere in the world, is home to vast, underserved populations. Our cities and rural areas pose numerous challenges to efficient healthcare delivery due to a shortage of requisite infrastructure and specialized healthcare practitioners. Therefore, they drive specific use cases that not only inspire medical device design but also pose challenges to standards adoption, which is critical to the affordability of any product. http://bit.ly/1KnhQo1
Wearable, low-power medical devices hold the promise of vastly improving the efficiency and cost of end-to-end (E2E) healthcare delivery. While this is particularly true in developing countries, success in this burgeoning domain would benefit...

Never before has the need been more evident for open standards that support privacy and security. Olaf Kolkman, open standards advocate and CTO of the Internet Society (ISOC), (an affirming partner of the OpenStand Principles) has been focusing on the need for collaborative security.  http://bit.ly/1QQzfuJ
