Behind every dog's name is a great story. Find out how Duck, the star of our latest commercial, got his name.

Our #dog of the day: The Lab. The Labrador Retriever is the most popular breed in the United States. Originally from Newfoundland, Canada, the Labrador was trained to jump overboard into the icy waters and haul fisherman's nets to shore. Specimens were brought to England where the Labrador's fine retrieving instincts were honed and developed. One of the best family dogs and canine companions because of his gentle, loving disposition, the highly trainable Labrador also excels in drug detection, as a guide for the blind, and a service dog for the disabled. The breed is also an outstanding obedience and field trial competitor. Want to know more? We've got it! http://www.iams.com/pet-health/dog-breeds/labrador-retriever

The Boxer (our #Dog of the Day) originated in the mid-1800s when German hunters interbred bulldog-type dogs with mastiff-type dogs and terriers. They were one of the first breeds to be used as a police and military dog in Germany. Though early Boxers may have been quite ferocious, the breed today is a very gentle, loving family companion. A highly intelligent, exuberant, playful and energetic breed. Easily trained — a good obedience dog. Very devoted to family, good with children. Quiet, but alert and protective. Our #dog of the day: The Dogue de Bordeaux. Originally springing from ancient mastiff stock, possibly even the Greek Molossus, the Dogue de Bordeaux has had many uses over his long history. The breed has served as war dog, flock guardian, cattle drover and personal bodyguard. Despite his fearsome appearance, the Dogue de Bordeaux is gentle with children, family members, and other creatures. Want to know more? http://www.iams.com/pet-health/dog-breeds/dogue-de-bordeaux

Our #dog of the day: The Chow Chow.
The Chow Chow's structure is very similar to that of the oldest known fossilized dog remains, dated to several million years ago. The Chow Chow has been known for thousands of years in China, where the breed was put to work as a hunter, cart puller, and boat guard. One emperor is said to have kept 2,500 Chow pairs! This beautiful dog was first brought to England by merchants in the late 1800s. The name probably originated from the pidgin English word "chow-chow," a term used to describe all sorts of miscellaneous stuff brought back from the Far East. The Chow has become very popular in the United States as a companion dog. To learn more: http://www.iams.com/pet-health/dog-breeds/chow-chow

Our #cat of the day: The Himalayan. Each year, the Himmie proves its popularity by recruiting more humans into its exclusive club. This is hard for some to understand, since membership requires becoming a cat hair stylist. However, Himalayan owners say it’s no secret—and no contest; the Himmie is the most poised, loving and sweet breed who ever padded around the planet. It’s all about personality. The regal Himmie is a sedate and affectionate cat, preferring to cuddle with you rather than climb your favorite curtains. Responsive to your moods and emotions, Himalayans share your joys and help you bear your sorrows. http://www.iams.com/pet-health/cat-breeds/himalayan

Our #cat of the day: The Abysiam. The Aby, as the breed is affectionately known, is thought to be one of the oldest domestic breeds, but when and where it originated is unknown. The tale most often told is that the Aby is a descendant of sacred cats worshiped by the ancient Egyptians some 4,000 years ago, but no evidence exists to support that story. Our #cat of the day: The Birman. This cat's coat is one of its most outstanding features. The breed has a lush ruff around the neck that frames the face, and a bottle-brush tail that’s long and luxuriously soft to the touch. The coat is also longer on the tummy and hindquarters. The soft, silky fur is medium-long to long, but, unlike the Persian, lacks the downy undercoat that would cause it to mat easily; the tresses are usually tangle-free.
