Ever tried light painting before? Dark nights make #Christmas the perfect season to experiment with light painting. To get started, grab a light source, a remote (or a friend) and a tripod, and follow these steps:
1. With your camera affixed to a tripod in a dark location, put it in manual mode, and set a long shutter speed, around 30 seconds. With a shutter speed of around 30 in a dark location, you’ll want an aperture of around f/8 and an ISO of around 100.
2. Focus your camera near the section of the frame you want to paint in.
3. If you have two people, ask one to press down the shutter and the other to paint shapes using your light source. Otherwise, use a remote. Your light source can simply be a torch, or you can download specialty smartphone apps, like ColorLight, and use your mobile phone as the light.
4. Assuming your light painter is moving quickly enough, you won’t see them in the image. It might take a few attempts to capture the look you want, so be patient. If you’re trying to write words, it may be easier to flip the picture after you take it than to write backwards!

There’s nothing quite like #minimalist #photography to test the technical experience not only of the photographer, but also those viewing the minimalist shot. There’s also nothing quite like #minimalism that challenges photographer’s ability to observe, interpret, compose and shoot interesting to perfection. So at the start of the year, we introduce you to our aptly entitled Photo of the Month for January: ‘Bye 2016 - hello future’.

Taken by Hendrik Lohmann with his #NikonDf + #NIKKOR 16.0-35.0 mm f/4.0 @ ƒ/18.0 | 16.0 mm | 1/100s | ISO 100, we love how Hendrick’s quick eye and clever framing underscores the title of this image. Visit Hendrick’s website to enjoy more from his work www.hendriklohmann.com

To kick of the New Year, we have come up with two challenges for you:

- This shot includes two subjects. Can you name them?
- If you have not tried minimalist photography before, take your skills to the #nextlevel and try it this year.

For a chance to have your photograph featured, please join our Flickr group and share your best shots with Nikon: www.flickr.com/groups/iamnikon

This is #TheNutcracker as you've never seen it before. We worked with @HetNationaleBallet dancer @MelissaChapski and creatives from @HouseofMakers to reimagine the world-famous Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy in the dark, and invited professional ballet dancer and photographer @LaurentLiotardo to shoot it on the new Nikon #D3400
