Microsoft Patents Internet Hugs
Written by Kay Ewbank
Sending hugs long distances sounds like the sort of thing wished for in soppy songs, but Microsoft has just taken out a patent for an Internet-enabled pillow that will give you a hug sent across the Web.

It's not as ridiculous as it sounds. The rational strategy behind patenting trivial things is to patent them before Apple does.

Apple's genius of late has been patenting, copyrighting and trademarking things no one would have thought could, or should, be Bogarted by one company. The only reasonable response is to turn silly into a business strategy.
It is what they did at Sun after getting burned by IBM patents. So I guess it makes sense.
