When I am developing a software, I feel like I am executing a stochastic gradient descent algorithm myself. You start with a large step size: you define a lot of important classes and everything is very flexible at that time...

+Vasil S Denchev actually that's what occurred to me when I was writing it :) but my knowledge on Tabu search is very limited while I have some familiarity with SGD.  Anyways I totally agree with everything you've said in the comment!  Software engineering is more of discrete optimization anyways.

probably not a good practice of decltype... (C++11 new feature)
OK, I thought C++11 was cool, but I am ending up writing a code like this: row_assign_ = my_allocator::type>().allocate(num_rows_); is this really better than row_assign_ = my_allocator().allocate(num_rows_); is... quite... ...

At last, finished reading this book... 'the signal and the noise'.
At last, I have finished reading the book 'the signal and the noise: why so many predictions fail- but some don't'. It does a very good job in explaining 1) why it is important for us to understand uncertainty - the central t...

# of Chinese friends that I could convert to use 'Lunar New Year's Day' for 4 years: 0

No offense to Chinese friends, I understand your position. Although I think probably the more effective strategy is for me to use 'Korean New Year' from now on, to make other people confused and then beware of other countries that share the same day of celebration eventually.

Or, Koreans may abolish everything and start the new tradition of 'Gangnam Style New Year' which every people, old and young, man and woman and queer, all gather and dance Gangnam Style... This may popularize more easily than 'Korean New Year'.

I just tried gflags, a command-line parsing library from Google. It had many attractive features I wanted, but unfortunately its help message is not well-suited for a general software... too geeky and exposes too much of internal information! If I am developing an in-house software (in Google!?) this could be an awesome choice but I will stay with boost program_options for now. Sure, its open source and I may customize the help message but most likely it is waste of my time.

another rant of my on cmake and c++11 compliance...
The reason I wasted 2 sweet afternoon hours of Saturday: 1) cmake 2.8.10 has a bug which removing CMakeCache.txt does not completely remove cached values of previous execution. Attempting -DCMAKE_CXX_COMPILER=icpc even result...

A question that bothers me: 1. simple model + small data: OK, if you have good understanding on the generative process. 2. complex model + small data: most likely fail due to overfitting, unless the noise is very very small s...

Please recommend me a good color theme for emacs in coding C++. From default theme list I liked 'Midnight' best - I am looking for black or gray background - but I am pretty sure there's better one.

+Cosmo Zhang Well i guess thats kinda biased due to clustering! My "neighbors" are mostly emacs users, although it is partly my influence :-)

I have been trying to use C++11 lately, but I think it is not yet safe to make a transition. I am using intel compiler (for TBB stuff) and it has compile error with deque.tcc... It was reported two years ago http://software.intel.com/en-us/forums/topic/281808 but surprisingly seem to be not fixed!?

It could be my fault, or there could be a workaround, but I feel like relying on C++11 will cause another trouble at some point in the future. Too bad, as C++11 syntax makes TBB code much simpler with lambda expression.

My problem with Chrome seems to be reproduced by many other people according to my Twitter timeline; this is quite surprising that even engineers and QAs at Google forgot to check exception handling for server down. OK, nobody is perfect; so I will be lenient towards my inability to develop fault-tolerant software.
