Today Xiaomi introduced 3 new products for Mi Fans:

#1) Mi Wi-Fi is a revolutionary new smart device for your home which we announced back in December and is coming out of Beta this week.

- It’s a router — 802.11ac with 2x2 dual-frequency beamforming
- It’s a media server — Broadcom dual-core 1GHz A9 chipset, 256MB DDR3 RAM, 1 TB hard drive
- It’s a smarthome center — remote control home appliances, lights, TV and audio equipment, air conditioning, IP cameras

Some really cool features:

- Automatically connect devices via NFC by tapping them to the router
- Remote control app (Android and iOS)
- 2x accelerated web browsing speeds (via Sogou browser engine)
- Download movies and videos remotely (via pre-loaded Xunlei app)
- User programmable smart rules for controlling devices in the home
- OpenWRT-based operating system, with weekly software updates

And with an open plug-in architecture and SDK, we expect developers will surprise us with incredible new use cases.

We’ve started taking pre-orders for Mi Wi-Fi in China today at ¥699 (approx. US$110), and will soon bring it to other markets.

Details at www.miwifi.com (English version coming soon).

Just a few hours ago, I was venting with Xiaomi colleague and Xoogler Hong Feng about how difficult it is to hire awesome product managers — I've screened hundreds of people and interviewed more than 30 since joining the team 6 months ago, and still nothing.

Funny enough, just as I got home I saw an email from one of the top 5 PMs I've ever worked with — Mat Balez — with a link to an essay he just finished... about product management.  He nails it.

I wrote a thing about what it's like to be a Product Manager.
a janitor, essentially.

Great read +Mat Balez and thanks for sharing +Hugo Barra without doubt good PMs possess a unusually rare blend of skills and character traits. As a PM I'm always striving to do better, but in a large organization such as IBM many of the things you write about are culturally challenging, and this article is a sound reminder of their importance.

Awesome Chinese invention — a collapsable parking lot gate billboard.  Worth watching closely... the mechanical design details are fascinating.

We've just wrapped up our 2014 Mi Fan Festival, which celebrated Xiaomi's 4th Birthday yesterday with a huge online party, over 1.3 million phones sold and ¥1.5 Billion in revenues in 12 hours.  A mind blowing experience.

But nothing beats witnessing the excitement behind the scenes.  The war room dashboards, last-minute bugs fixed in real time, the synchronized drums at the end of every sale hour, games played throughout the day around the office (except if you're in the e-commerce team!), a 剪刀石头布 (rock-paper-scissors) on-stage marathon, and a giant birthday cake for 1000 people.

I tried to capture it all with a few photos and a couple of videos, but it's virtually impossible to do justice to the real experience.  All I can really say is... thank you Mi Fans and Xiaomi colleagues — 你们碉堡了!

我们爱米粉!

One of the cool things about Xiaomi's new Beijing office is that we were finally able to dedicate a little space to some of the gifts we've received from Mi fans over the last couple of years.  Some priceless items in there!

A really cool write-up by +Kaylene Hong from The Next Web about the inner workings of Xiaomi's social media model, inspired by the 2014 Mi Fan Festival which just wrapped up yesterday.

http://thenextweb.com/asia/2014/04/09/xiaomis-social-media-strategy-drives-fan-loyalty-books-it-242m-in-sales-in-12-hours/
Xiaomi took to social media to engage its fans during its fourth anniversary flash sale, eventually booking it $242m in sales in 12 hours.

Absolutely fascinating property, beautiful grounds and spacious rooms. Service quality, however, is well below the 4-star level, mostly due to poorly trained staff at all levels below the managers. This appears to have been a serious regression from previous years based on what I had heard from others who had visited this property years ago. Makes it hard to justify the high rates.

Pros: - Killer location on Copacabana beach, a few minutes walk from Ipanema beach - Excellent breakfast banquet Cons: - Smoky rooms (non-smoking rules not enforced, thick carpet that isn't properly cleaned) - Inattentive service staff - Very expensive for value provided
