What does "natural" on food packaging even mean?! Honestly, no one knows, not even the U.S. Food and Drug Administration...
The FDA is trying to come up with a definition for "natural" foods, but it's not so easy.

DID YOU KNOW: Bananas are the most commonly purchased produce item in the US!

Sadly, an overwhelming majority of conventionally grown banana workers have to fight violations like below-minimum pay (we're talking $45/week), impediments to unionizing, lack of protective equipment, exhausting workdays (14+ hour shifts), and literally undergoing toxic chemical fumigation in the fields. As consumers, we have the power to change this.

Purchasing the beloved fruit from companies like Equal Exchange that only work with small family farms under Fair Trade conditions can shift the paradigm. Their producers are paid fairly year round and work in safe conditions. Social programs that benefit their communities, such as the building of schools, medical centers, and facilities for children with special needs, are also supported through the sale of their Fair Trade bananas. BUT PLEASE REMEMBER THAT NOT ALL FAIR TRADE BANANAS ARE CREATED EQUAL- those grown on plantations are usually still heavily doused with toxic pesticides, along with its workers. We must buy from small family farms to make a difference.

Check out this web documentary that reveals the complex and alarming history of the banana industry. You'll never look at breakfast the same way again!
A web documentary about Fair Trade bananas and the people behind a movement to change the banana industry.

Environmental group Oceana DNA tested over 1200 samples of fish from nearly 700 different stores & restaurants in 21 states. They found that 1 out of 3 fish were mislabeled, violating U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulations.

How can this be?! The seafood supply chain is dangerously "opaque & convoluted." Read more below..
Beware of fish fraud: The supply chain for seafood is opaque, and most white-fleshed fish looks similar when filleted

Does your local grocer carry the HowGood Ratings program? We make it easy for you to shop with confidence- as an independent researcher, we've rated over 170,000 food products while considering more than 70 research indicators. Only 5% of the industry earns our "Best" rating!

This is all boiled down to simple in-store signage & shelf tags that tell you which food products are best for your family, the environment, and the workers that make them.

If your local market doesn't have our #food #ratings, ask a manager to consider enrolling in the program or tag them in the comments below! http://ow.ly/i/mf95F http://ow.ly/i/mf98P

LISTEN UP 📢 Food labels are (sometimes intentionally) confusing. Here's a quick 3 minute podcast from NPR (featuring #ratedBEST brand Pete and Gerry's Organic Eggs ) to help you better understand the difference between #ORGANIC and #NONGMO labeling.
Sales of food labeled "non-GMO" are booming, and it's starting to annoy organic food companies. They see the non-GMO label as cut-rate competition that doesn't deliver what shoppers imagine.
