I recently wrote about our students'  efforts using MIT's App Inventor.  The only thing more inspiring than the collaboration and problem solving has been their desire to continue to work at home (without any prompting).  Read the message below (that I received over the weekend.

Dear Mr. Kiyuna:

I’m now experimenting with ai2 App Inventor, and I think I have made some discoveries that may have opened some new doors! It’s amazing! Here’s a screenshot of part of my code (of Screen1, and ignore the text bar thing):

          [See attached image]

I think I have figured out how to make these things:

-  An experience point system.
-  Replacing text with what users typed in (in this case, the penguin’s     name replacing “Egg”)
-  Autosaving

I found out these things by experimenting with variables, the tiny database, labels and the math blocks. I wanted to tell you this so it could help on the apps other students are making. There are at least a couple using the tiny database, so I thought this would be a useful discovery. I will work on this app some more and see if I can discover more things.

Signed,
M

* 3 Google Chrome Apps for Leveled Reading (and much more!)* #GAFE   #GoogleEdu   #edtech   #reading

If you have followed this blog for very long, then you know that I am a self-professed Chrome Addict. I love it! I love the fact that I can customize it to fit my needs, but I love it even more because we can customize it to fit the needs of learners! Below are just a few Google Chrome Apps to support readers in the classroom. These apps offer various ways find leveled reading material (by Lexile and grade level), as well as many other robust features!

Mazda RX-9 Concept

Mazda, seemingly the only act in town still using a rotary motor, is developing a new form of rotary motor technology to use in the upcoming RX-9. The RX-9, based off of the Mazda Kabura Concept, will be Mazda’s next flagship sportscar.Details are sparse but rumor has it that Mazda will finally ditch the gimmicky quasi-four-door layout with some platform elements being borrowed from the MX-5 roadster.

Internally within the walls of Mazda, the new Renesis rotary engine project is known as the 16X and has grown to a healthy 300bhp. I wouldn’t expect Mazda to come forth with anything less to be honest and they need to come out strong with their new technology if they want to be taken seriously in the affordable sportscar market. With the major players producing more affordable and powerful sportscars Mazda certainly has their work cut out for them. A major goal, other than neck snapping performance, is keeping the new rotary technology as green as possible with efficiency at the for front of their intentions. This has been a severe downfall of the outdated RX-8 as it has been known to love its fair share of fuel and oil. Should Mazda pull off a more efficient and powerful rotary motor, I’d say they have a real chance at nipping at the tails of the 370z’s, G37′s and STI’s out there.

I hope some American broadcast company hires all 4 of them and allows them to start their own car show.
It's the end of an era for one of the BBC's biggest shows.

Do Chromebooks have a limit of 18 users? I've been setting up accounts for first and second graders and it looks like the screen only has room for 3 rows of 6. Today some students had to log in again by "+add user". Mind you logging in for these youngsters takes time!

Google Photos: there it is in Drive.

Showed up for me just now. Seeing it on Chromebook and on desktop (well, both are the browser version so they should be identical). Mind you, there's no content there for me just yet.
