Is Blue Light Harmful? The short answer is “yes”. Blue light from your cell phone, computer or tablet penetrates the eyes to cause eyestrain, red eyes, and tired eyes. Blue light also increases your risk for macular degeneration by penetrating all the way to the retina (the inner lining of the back of the eye). Laboratory studies have shown that too much exposure to blue light can damage light-sensitive cells in the retina. The same way that invisible ultra violet rays in the sun can burn your skin, blue light can “burn” your eyes. Different colors of light emit different amounts of energy that can cause health problems. Symptoms of digital eyestrain from blue light include sore or irritated eyes and difficulty focusing. Just imagine what would happen to your eyes and skin if you sat outside in the sun as many hours as you work on your computer or cell phone … The long hours you spend on a digital device will eventually take its toll on your eyes. The bottom line: Protecting your eyes while on your phone and computer is as important as protecting them when outdoors in the sun! We can prescribe a combination of blue light filters to wear as well as nutritional supplements to protect the inside health of your precious eyes. Dr. Brisco has consulted to various pharmaceutical and nutraceutical companies about using healthy foods and nutritional supplements to protect your eyes Dr. Brisco has improved the lives of her patients for 30 years. Stress affects us in many different ways: Acid reflex High blood pressure Headaches Skin break outs Depression/anxiety Insomnia But did you know that your eyes can get stressed out also? Think about what you do each day? The average American stares at a computer or cell phone more than 10 hours a day! Visual stress is the experiencing of unpleasant symptoms when reading, especially for prolonged periods. Have you ever wished you did something sooner rather than later? Why wait until tomorrow to do something that you could more easily take care of today? That’s is especially true about taking care of yourself to prevent future health problems. Many health problems are preventable with living a healthy lifestyle. Eating clean broccoli 🥦 , fitness, sleep 😴 mindfulness 🧘🏽‍♂️ and having love in your life ❤️ are keys 🔑 to aging gracefully. However, even with living clean, many health problems do not have warning signs until it’s too late. This hit home for me when a very close friend and mentor of mine died of cancer recently. He was the model of healthy living, but he didn’t have regular wellness exams. Many eye problems such as glaucoma, strabismus, amblyopia (last eye) are more easily treatable if detected in the early stage. Message of the day: DON’ T WAIT UNTIL YOU ARE SICK, YOUR TEETH ARE FALLING OUT, OR YOU CAN’T SEE TO SEE YOUR DOCTOR 👩🏻‍⚕️!!! #preventivecare #earlydetection #selfcare #loveyourself #integrativemedicine #doctor #womeninmedicine #glaucoma #holistichealth #holisticdoctor #naturalmedicine #amblyopia #strabismus #lazyeye #takecareofyourself #healthylifestyle #fitness #wellnessblogger #wellness #optometry #laoptometrist #losangelesoptometrist #ladydoctor #aginggracefully #thebestisyettocome #stayhealthy #lovelife #feelgood #beyourbest #eye

The non-contact tonometer calculates your intraocular pressure (IOP) based on your eye's resistance to the puff of air. If you have high eye pressure, you may be at risk for, or have glaucoma. High intraocular pressure can cause damage to the optic nerve by not allowing enough circulation to the vessels and nerves in the eye. Another type of glaucoma test is performed with an instrument called an applanation tonometer. The puff is a small burst of air into your eye. The air bounces back to the tonometer and gives the machine a reading of your eye's intraocular pressure (IOP), or pressure inside the eye. Although you think the machine will touch your eye, it doesn’t! If your eye pressure becomes too high, the delicate nerve fibers in the back of your eye can be damaged, resulting in vision loss. There are usually little to no symptoms or pain associated with high eye pressure, which is why the puff test can save your vision. Dr. Brisco has improved the lives of her patients for 30 years. Everyone wants brighter, whiter eyes because red eyes make you look unhealthy or tired. Some people use eyedrops to get the red out, but this doesn’t treat the underlying cause, and could it do more harm than good. The first thing to know is why are the eyes red. Is it due to allergies, dry eyes, fatigue, or an underlying health issue? Possible causes of red eyes include: Dry eyes Eye infection Allergies Digital eye strain Smoking cigarettes or marijuana Not enough sleep Air pollution Glaucoma Rheumatoid arthritis High blood pressure Rosacea Sjogren’s syndrome Overexertion (Valsalva maneuver) If your eyes are red more than 48-72 hours, see your Optometrist to find out what needs to be done for your eyes, and your health. Your optometrist will work with your physician if she suspects that there is an underlying health problem. We can detect many health problems from examining your eyes since your eyes are highly sensitive to health issues, and are the only transparent part of the body where you can see INSIDE the eyes. Check yearly to see clearly! Dr. Brisco has improved the lives of her patients for 30 years. Experience Counts! How do your eyes feel at the end of the day? Stressed out eyes can lead to blurry vision, red eyes, dry eyes, being tired as your eyes have to work harder. Here are some ways in which you can alleviate the stress in a healthy and holistic way. 1. Blink often to refresh your eyes. … 2. Take eye breaks. ... a 20 second break looking 20 feet away every 20 minutes (20/20/20) 3. Check the lighting and reduce glare sources in the room 4. Adjust your monitor to slightly below your eye level . 5. Adjust your screen settings. 6. Wear computer glasses to filter out glare and harmful blue light Generally, treatment for eyestrain consists of making changes in your daily habits or environment. Some people may need treatment for an underlying eye condition. If you still have strain in your eyes or often find yourself tired by mid-day you might need to go in and get checked. Maybe you need a new prescription or to hydrate your eyes more often. We have many solutions including rejuvenating and relaxing treatments at our Moistureyes Dry Eye Spa. Are eyedrops the answer for whiter, brighter eyes? Do you want whiter, brighter eyes? Do eyedrops work? The best way to treat a problem is to look at the cause. There are many reasons for red, tired looking eyes. Red eye drops such as Visine and Clear Eyes only work temporarily to “get the red out” by constricting the blood vessels on the surface of the eyes. They don’t treat the underlying cause. The danger is that if you use these drops regularly, your eyes can actually become more red! This is called rebound hyperemia. The body becomes dependent on the chemicals that constrict the blood vessels, that when you don’t use the drops, your eyes are more red. Not good … If your eyes are red for more than 3 days of using the eye drops, see your optometrist to find the underlying reason. Artificial tears may make your eyes feel better, and even less red, but this is also only a temporary solution. Your eyes will feel better, but only until the artificial tears wash out of your eyes within 20-30 minutes. With repeated use, the thickeners and preservatives in the tear drops can actually make your eyes feel sticky, and worse than they started. Even non-preserved artificial tears are just that, “artificial”. I prefer tear stimulation drops that actually trigger natural tear release such as Forte Tear Stimulation drops and Women’s Tear Stimulation drops by Natural Ophthalmics. Check them out here---> https://buff.ly/2BUB0mJ The best way to treat red, tired and dry eyes is by treating the underlying problem. Stay tuned for a discussion on this … Dr. Brisco has improved the lives of her patients for 30 years. Experience Counts!
