So I spent 20 minutes in an Apple Store looking at the iPad Mini, iPad 3, Retina Macbooks, and Macbook Airs. If I'd been trying to decide what to buy on that trip, I'd be a bit lost. Here's my take on it: Everything would be best with a retina screen.

The iPad Mini and the 11" Air are much nicer to hold and they feel much more convenient but they're not as nice to read from because of the "old" resolution—it makes the text fuzzy enough to cause me to zoom (and in the case of the iPad, rotate) and scroll around as if I'm on an iPhone/iPod. The retina iPad and Macbooks are really amazing to look at.. I mean, they're every bit as retina as the iPhone but big. Staring at the crispness made me forget I was even standing in a store. Even if text is small, I can still read it perfectly fine without zooming.

The downsides of the Macbook are that the scale of everything is still rather large and the glossy is still too reflective. The iPad 3 feels awfully heavy compared to the Mini and would feel far more noticeable to use out in public.

I then started to think about tablet vs laptop and simulated trying to do everything I do out at work and in transit with only one or the other. The tablet is crap to type on quickly, so since I can't use Siri everywhere, I'd prefer a laptop. The tiny Air would be a great form-factor for using on the bus and carrying around for work but I wouldn't want to be stuck with only the tiny screen set inside such a wide bezel for everything I'm doing lately.

So all of this leads me to two conclusions: 1) what I'd really like is something with a Retina screen about the size and weight of an iPad mini with a flip-out keyboard, which I could use as both a touch screen and a laptop (with ports for mice and monitors). 2) Apple is probably aware that neither of these four devices are just the right thing and so they're probably aware that it makes me want to buy all 4 and use them for different things at different times. Arg!
