In an era before cellphones, there were numerous banks of telephone booths in most major buildings. People carried around spare change and would drop in nickels, dimes and quarters to keep talking over the allotted time limit. If in searching your pockets, you couldn't find the change quickly enough, you were disconnected and had to call back. If you had no change at all, you would place a collect call and hope that the recipient would accept to pay your changes. Ah, the old days.
