Stan Van Hoose is a brave WWII veteran who, as a young 21 year old, had been stationed at Pearl Harbor on the USS Maryland on December 7, 1941, when the bombing began on Battleship Row. Stan stood witness to the “date which will live in infamy” before defending America in other battles throughout the Pacific, including Guadalcanal, Russell Islands, Peleliu, Midway, and Tarawa. Now 95 years old, Stan will be participating in Essential History Expeditions’ Pearl Harbor tour and the official 75th anniversary events to commemorate that day and the US entrance into WWII. Happy 247th to the Emperor!

Martin van Crevald, the Israeli military historian, called him "perhaps the most competent human being who ever lived." and "one of those beings, who, like supernovae, light up the world."


Or, as the eminent Professor Donald D Horward (who taught French Revolutionary and Napoleonic history for half a century) referred to him -- "The man who pays the bills!"

"The Declaration of Independence of the Congress of Philadelphia, on July 4th, 1776, consecrated this right in a beautiful paragraph which reads:

On this date in 1898, the USA annexed Hawaii. The Queen had been overthrown in January 1893, by American settlers, but it wasn't until the Spanish-American war that the US decided to act in a permanent fashion.


We will explore this aspect of Hawaiian history, and much more - from Kamehameha through Pearl Harbor and on to this day. and culture


And, of course, miles and miles of beaches and ocean!

~ Major General Chuck Sweeney who, as a 25 year old Major, commanded Bockscar and dropped Fat Man on Nagasaki on this date 71 years ago.


We are visiting Hawaii this December to explore the 75th commemoration of Pearl Harbor and the beginning of the war that Sweeny helped end. Come join this last reunion at Pearl with the veterans of the Greatest Generation.

August 8, 1918 was "the Black Day of the German Army." I saw retreating troops yelling at officers "You're prolonging the war!" and calling incoming replacements "Blacklegs or Strikebreakers!"

98 years ago, the allied offensive near Amiens broke the back of the German Army. For the first time, Ludendorff and other generals saw morale cracking and widespread surrenders. There would be three more months of tremendous fighting, with an open, maneuver warfare resuming along the western front. But the end was in sight for both sides now.


In two years, summer of 2018, Essential History Expeditions will lead a tour of the American battlefields of the Great War (along with Verdun). We hope you will join us on this epic adventure!

I first read Hersey's 1946 classic, "Hiroshima", as a teenager in the 70s and it had a major impact.

Today is the 71st anniversary of the dropping of the bomb and the beginning of the end of the American-Japanese war in the Pacific that began on December 7, 1941. We will take a group this December to Pearl Harbor to commemorate the 75th anniversary of that event and examine World War Two, and Hawaiian history and culture.
Join us on this trip of a lifetime, perhaps the last major commemoration with veterans of that day of infamy.

On this date in 1944, Truscott's corps at Anzio linked up with Gen Mark Clark's 5th Army and continued their advance on Rome.

"Vive la France! Vive la democratie!" ~ Yvonne, in Casablanca

Captain Renault said to Rick, just before this scene, something to the effect that Yvonne's consorting with the Nazis would almost constitute a Second Front in herself!  Madeleine Lebeau, who played Yvonne at 19, died earlier this month at 92.
