Happy Seward's Day!

Did you know in 1867, Secretary of State William Seward purchased the State of Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million? For thirty years after its purchase, everyone called Alaska "Seward's Folly", thinking it was worthless, until in 1896, gold was first discovered in the territory, making way for the Klondike Gold Rush. Alaska finally became a state in 1959.

Today marks the 50th anniversary of the 1964 Great ‪Alaska Earthquake. The 9.2 magnitude quake's epicenter hit Prince William Sound at 5:36 pm, and lasted approximately 4 minutes, and was the second largest earthquake recorded in North America.

The Historic Anchorage Hotel was fortunate enough to be one of the few buildings in downtown that remained standing, and we are proud at how far our great state has come from that day 50 years ago.

There will be several events occurring today in memory of the great quake: http://www.adn.com/2014/03/26/3395570/events-exhibits-memorials-marking.html
