All stars deserved :-)

PCWorlds has reviewed Paperpile. We got five stars :)

"Paperpile is a reference manager that's worth its price, and will only get better from here."

"There are enough hardships in academic life without having to fight with references and citations, and Paperpile is the first service I’ve used that makes this truly painless."

"Sounds too good to be true? It did to me too [...]"

That's too bad. The previous 7 years have been truly awesome each time.

The good news is that +Open Bioinformatics Foundation has been accepted, after having had to sit out last year. Yay!

Dear all.

Unfortunately, our application for this year's Summer of Code was rejected.

We realise this is a real disappointment. The SoC is not only a chance to get great students, but also gives us all an opportunity for new collaborations, and get more of an an insight into our respective specializations.

But don't give up now !  Many of the ideas that you (the NESCent mentors) posted on the NESCent GSoC 2014 page could easily fit the remit of one of the organisations that will be participating in this year's SoC.

To that end - I've added some links to the bio/science/math related organisations to help you repurpose your ideas if you'd still like to act as a mentor this year.

Today is the last day to get PhyloSoC project ideas up on the wiki - the deadline for the org applications is tomorrow! We have a pretty small list at the moment, so if you have something in mind, please do put it up on the wiki.

All contributions to the High Visbility Project (http://highvisibilityproject.org/) are really inspiring in some way or another. But for me personally, this one by +Garann Means is the one I connect with most.

While some smaller part of these stories are about the experiences women have to endure in a male-dominated field, I feel they are just really also about the human experience. Most people in this world don't come from well-to-do upbringings. I didn't clean toilets, but I did earn my living for two years with my bare hands. For many people, the path to where they are now has been far from straight. Yet, it is this diversity of everyone's unique life experiences that makes the world interesting, inspiring, and energizing. I know I'm as proud of mine as these women are of theirs.

Yay - Google Summer of Code coming up. Note the call for mentors and projects interested in participating under the NESCent umbrella. Asking is free!

We are starting to gear up for a 2014 GSoC application. Do you develop an open source software package for evolutionary biology? Are there features queued for development that would make a good summer programming project? This is the time to start thinking about project ideas!

Of course, if you've heard her give a talk before, the slides are a far cry from hearing +Carole Goble actually present it, but they're still a great resource in and of themselves.

'Goble results may vary' - profound words there...
