A local South Austin hot spot since 1947, Hills Cafe has been serving up the best southern comfort food, steaks and BBQ anyone could ask for. An old Austin original with live music, catering, outdoor dining and large oak trees, Hill’s Cafe is a destination for great food and fun! Did we mention a full bar and awesome drink prices?

Had a late lunch there yesterday with my husband. Wanted to get our drinks refill midway through the lunch and could not find our server. In fact could not find anybody in the restaurant, including the bartender. The only other customer in the place gave out a piercing whistle. (He was waiting in vain for his tab.) No one responded. After about 10 minutes our server finally showed up. She explained the staff had a meeting! What kind of restaurant manager pulls all its staff out of the building for a meeting when there are customers present? Food was okay, but the coleslaw looked a little old. And the potato salad is German style. This is not Fredericksburg or New Braunfels. Austin usually has mustard potato salad. Was kind of surprised.

This is really shocking for me to hear, Mary. You're right: Regardless if there was a meeting, there should have been someone there to attend to your table. I'm going to address this and make sure that we're doing the best we can on the service front. You deserve better! -Ellis

Such a homey, southern kind of place. Fried pickles (appetizer for those who've never enjoyed them) are a little salty. More later.
Response from the owner - 2 weeks ago
Janet, I'm glad you're in the know about fried pickles -- next time we'll make sure the saltiness isn't too much for you. Hope to have you back sometime soon. -Ellis

I'll never eat here again. I usually only do Google Reviews for places that I enjoy, but I have to make an exception here. I've lived in Austin for 6 years, off and on, and love the restaurant scene here. This was hands down my worst experience at a restaurant in Austin. I'll be honest the food was OK and if it was just for the food I may give this place 3 stars. But the service was HORRENDOUS! It was clear that there was no real leadership at this restaurant. Our "server" was also the bartender and he continued to forget our requests (i.e. refills, more tartar sauce, etc.). From what I had previously heard, this place was a South Austin staple, but it looks like it's gone waaaay down in quality. Worst part is that it wasn't even busy, so they didn't have an excuse to be so dang slow.

For many years, Hill's had my favorite burger in the whole wide world. The Southwest Burger was huge, with bacon, pepper jack, chipotle mayo, serrano peppers, and a magical sweet kolache bun. The beef was outstanding, amazingly seasoned and always cooked to perfection. Paired with their brew fries, it was guaranteed to send you straight to burgervana - it was basically all I ever ordered there since it was so good. A few months ago Hill's decided that for some reason they needed to randomly redesign their menu and change stuff around. What's now called the Southwest Burger is an impostor, with jalapenos, pico de gallo, and queso instead. It's decent, but I'm not ordering it again. Luckily the Diner Deluxe is an acceptable substitute, if you add on the chipotle mayo, and it even has a solid addition of mushrooms. However, in addition to somehow lacking the magic of the original, it's more expensive, and the new type of fries they bring out if you don't specify "brew fries" are thin potato strings with a dandruffy dusting of Parmesan cheese. I've had friends complain that other things on the menu don't seem to be quite as good as they used to be, the chicken-fried chicken in particular allegedly having decreased in size/quality. I wouldn't know about that, but while I still enjoy their burgers, they're not what they used to be, and I've stopped touting them to friends as the most overlooked burgers in town. I also miss some of the vanished desserts, like their banana pudding. Whose bright idea was that? Still worth a stop though. I complain only because I liked it Back In The Day so much.

It's good! The mashed potatoes were outstanding, the mac-n-cheese was good. The CFS was good, not the best I've had, but it is worth eating here, despite what previous reviewers wrote.

This isn't a cafe. They only sell breakfast on weekends. And after only getting two drinks we had to leave a ten on the table for poor service. Not walking out on a two soda tab that was 6 bucks fyi. Never go here. I wont ever again.

It's disheartening to hear that you had a negative experience here, Evelyn. The "Cafe" is in the name because it started off as a coffee shop many years ago. That being said, I know we can do better. Please let us know if you have any further questions or concerns. I'm sorry that you didn't have a better time here. -Ellis

This once amazing place has fallen from grace. The queso looked as if it was mixed from a powder, and the 14oz ribeyes arrived looking light worn boot leather. The only reason i took leftovers was to feed them to a stray behind my office. I'm usually not one to write a review or complain about bad food, but the 35 dollars warrents some kind of action. This place WAS great in its day but obviously its time has passed.

I'm really sorry to hear you weren't impressed with your visit last year, Ryan. We want to make sure everyone is leaving full and happy. I can assure you we're still making all our dishes fresh just like when we first started out. Hopefully you'd be willing to join us again so we can show you we still have a passion for what we do. Take care -Ellis
