The first of the season's plums are ripening. Domestic fowl wander across country lanes and wild pigs lie in the shade of the forest. Not a lot of people are around on these hot summer days. So, if one sticks to the byways, one gets a sense of having the countryside to oneself. Many aspects of this deeply rural landscape have hardly changed in the 250 years since a Polish monarch presided over the affairs of this part of France. Welcome to Bar-le-Duc. #France #history
Stanislaw Leszczynski, or King Stanislaw, lost the throne of Poland (twice as it happens), but was compensated by being awarded territory in eastern France. Thus it was that in 1735 the town of Bar-le-Duc found itself welcomi...

Have you heard of Plitvice National Park in Croatia? As you can see, it's an idyllic spot for hiking and swimming. The closest rail station is Vrhovi-Plitvi Jezera.

Historically, there have been many islands in harbours which gave a foreign polity some lean or sway over the country which administered the harbour. We look at some examples in our latest "Letter from Europe".   #islands   #politics   #Europe
Cartographers, seafarers, poets and artists have long seen the appeal of offshore islands - and they are especially interesting when political allegiance and geography do not quite seem to agree. Perhaps the most striking pol...

The notion of pre-planning train journeys was anathema to early travellers. Karl Baedeker repeatedly reminded readers of his guides that they should avoid buying return or circular tickets, even though in some countries such tickets offered a small discount over the cost of making the same journey using separate single tickets. Such tickets, advised Baedeker's 1881 guide to Switzerland, "are apt to hamper the traveller's movements and deprive him of the independence essential to enjoyment." #travel   #railways   #Europe   #tickets
The notion of pre-purchasing train tickets was generally unknown to Victorian travellers. It is only in the last generation that rail operators have started to use dynamic pricing, offering handsome discounts for travellers w...

Recalling Pentecost in Altötting, a small town in Bavaria, less than a day's walk from the border with Austria, that packs a few surprises.
#Altötting   #religion   #Europe   #Germany
It rained last night on the hills above the Inn Valley in Bavaria. Lucky were those pilgrims who had the luxury of a bed in one of the many small inns and guest houses which are to be found along the route of Saint James. Nou...

There are too few surviving synagogues in the cities of central Europe. We recall one of them - the Great Synagogue in the Czech city of Plzen.
#jewish   #heritage   #europe
You might expect the most striking building in Plzen to be a brewery. But there's more to Plzen than beer. In fact the most impressive building in the Czech city is the Great Synagogue on Plzen's main thoroughfare.

Thoughts on our home city of Berlin in our latest "Letter from Europe". #Berlin   #Germany
Our travels over the last fortnight have taken us from one end of Germany to the other. Yet strangely this is a country which neither of us really understands. One of us is a Berliner by birth, the other a Berliner by choice...
