hidden europe 45 has just been published. See the full table of contents along with extracts from each article in the magazine. The issue is topped and tailed with features from France, two articles which look respectively at Brittany and Provence. In Lenten spirit, we include a feature on the Lithuanian tradition of carving wooden crosses. We have an interesting diversion via the Alps which leads us into the history of science as we ponder many shades of blue. And much more besides! #Europe   #travel   #magazine
A new issue of hidden europe is published tomorrow. Not just any issue of hidden europe, but one which marks our tenth birthday. Yes, it was way back in March 2005 that we published the first-ever issue of the magazine. For t...

If we'd had both the energy and the time, we would surely have headed deeper into the hills. But we had neither, nor was the weather on our side. Squally showers of snow swept down off Ben Ledi. With the sun hidden behind dull layers of cloud, we took the easy option and stuck to the shores of Loch Lubnaig. #Scotland   #travel
We love real weather. And we had real weather aplenty on a journey through Scotland this week. Clear blue skies at Carsaig Bay with glorious views west to Jura. Great spreads of grey-white snow over Rannoch, the hills all hid...

While many overseas visitors to Paris tend to see the Eiffel Tower as a symbol of the French capital, in France itself Marianne has a more enduring appeal, her influence reaching way beyond the capital to the remotest corners of provincial France. Bust and bas-relief representations of Marianne can be found in town halls and court buildings, even in schools and post offices, across France. She embodies the principles of liberty that lie close to French hearts.

Our image shows Eugene Delacroix's famous 1830 painting of Liberty leading the people. The original is in the Louvre in Paris.

France has changed since our last Letter from Europe. The attacks in Paris which started on 7 January were assaults on an entire nation. For in France, more than elsewhere in Europe, the principles of liberty are more closely...

We recall Patrick Leigh Fermor's account of his journey on foot from Hook of Holland to the Marches of Hungary in the winter of 1933 in today's 'Letter from Europe'. This was a journey framed by the seasons - and the observational detail in the wintry scenes described by Leigh-Fermor is all the more remarkable when we remember that he only wrote the book four decades later. A 'Time of Gifts' was published in 1977. #travel   #Christmas   #LeighFermor
The Magi set a trend by travelling in the dying wick of the year. This is the season when most folk just want to hunker down by the fire with friends and family. But it is actually a very fine time for exploring. One of the f...

Thoughts on our home city of Berlin in our latest "Letter from Europe". #Berlin   #Germany
Our travels over the last fortnight have taken us from one end of Germany to the other. Yet strangely this is a country which neither of us really understands. One of us is a Berliner by birth, the other a Berliner by choice...

Grab your coat and come with us. This walk we'll make together is important, and this week is the time to do it. Important because, if we want to understand Ukraine, then we need to know the poetry of Taras Shevchenko. And there's no better place to read Shevchenko than overlooking the River Dnieper just downstream from Kaniv. #Ukraine   #poetry

No-one drives the West Tangent for fun. The tangenziale ovest sweeps around the west side of Milan, cutting through areas where industrial premises have nudged aside ancient orchards and olive groves. There are pylons, piles of pallets and container parks.

Yet the beauty of the West Tangent is that it reveals another side of Milan. And there's a buzz this winter throughout Rho and Pero, communities by the West Tangent which will host Expo 2015. Enjoy our latest 'Letter from Europe'. The photo below shows the design for the Italian pavilion at Expo 2015 in Milan (image courtesy of Studio Nemesi & partners). #Italy #Milan #expo2015 #food
A van speeds by in the fast lane of the West Tangent ring road, bearing the inscription: 'Nutrire il pianeta, energia per la vita'. That is the Milan mantra for 2015. 'Feed the planet, energy for life'. For this year Milan ho...

The last year or two have been, more than ever before, a period in which Africa has been on our minds. Our travels have taken us from the tea plantations of Limpopo to the dune coast of Maputaland. We have explored back roads in Swaziland and street markets in Mozambique. In our last newsletter of 2014 join us as we venture beyond the shores of Europe to reflect on the landscapes of Africa. #southafrica #literature #landscape
Alan Paton's Cry, the Beloved Country is a volume where the land and landscapes of Africa stand centre stage in the plot. In his book, first published in 1948, Paton goes beyond the romantic rendering of South African landsca...

Wonderful post by travel writer Laurence Mitchell from Thingvellir in southern Iceland - the meeting place of the Icelandic assembly in days long gone... #Iceland
The winter solstice marks the dark frontier of the annual cycle: that time of year when days are at their shortest; the period of feasting before the corner of the year is turned and daylight and w...
