Danger rating of 5 (out of 5) across much of the Alps today. Henry talks about following the resort safety advice. Risks are likely to increase today as the temperature rises bringing rain below 2000m leading to an increase in natural avalanches.

Henry gives you an update on the recent snowfall and the impact on off-piste skiing and avalanche risk tomorrow Sunday 31st December. There is a warm sunny day tomorrow and there could be wet snow avalanches lower down and dry snow avalanches higher up. the danger rating stays at 4 which is high. This means stay away from steep slopes.

Henry describing the offpiste snowpack today. All pretty stable at the moment. But the snow is degrading into cohesionless sugary snow that will form a weak layer underneath the next fall of fresh snow.

The paradox is that less snow most often means less stable; and more snow often means more stable' (in the northern French Alps)

.. then with the stable snowpack & 3 rating, it's easy to get complacent... and easy to miss the fact that you are heading to a steep recently wind-loaded slope over a cliff or narrow bottom.

Join us Sunday 13th March at 1800GMT.  The event will be broadcast on this page and on our You Tube channel.

The people who have the most fun off piste find the best routes.  This is about where the best snow is, away from the crowds, where the safe snow is and knowing the best way out and back home.  Some of this is navigation, some is avalanche awareness, it always involves understanding the conditions, sometimes you need a map.  You always need to know where you are.

Henry will tell us how he finds is way around, especially when he goes into less familiar terrain.  He will also share how he navigates and chooses slopes in his home area of Val d'Isere and Tignes.

Chris will talk about the principles of navigation,  Chris is experienced as a yacht navigator as well as having a good grasp of maps.

But we also have a star guest.  Misha Goupal is a real Map nerd and has recently launched an amzing new app to help us find our our way around the off-piste, get ski stats and data and connect with our friends.  Misha and his team created FATMAP.  We will get the chance to ask Misha about the story behind his revolutionary digital mapping and show how you can use it to make better decisions and discover better routes.

Jojn us Sunday 17th January at 1800GMT.  The event will be broadcats on this page and on our You Tube channel.

You will be able to ask questions by writing them in the comments box or clicking on the Q&A button.  We will answer them on the call.

Henry will be online at 1800GMT today with  @TeamOngosa @OngosaRich to help you learn about how to find the best off-piste guides and with a live update on current conditions
You will probably know that at the time of writing this post, 60cm of snow has fallen this week and there is another 60cm expected by Sunday, so conditions are changing for the better.

In this Hangout with Henry, we will have two speakers.  Henry will give us his update on snow conditions, the current risks and where he is going to find the best snow over the next few days.

But as the conditions get more fun, they can be more dangerous and you may be thinking you could do with a professional guide.

So we will be joined by Richard Smith.  Richard has just launched www.ongosa.com which is an online service to help you find the best adventure sports instructors and guides.  In the process of setting up Ongosa, Richard has talked with many of the best snow-sports instructors and off-piste guides.  So Richard has learned a lot about what makes them tick, how they work and how you can find the right guide or instructor for your needs.

Richard tells his story about why he started Ongosa here
http://www.planetski.eu/news/6982

Richard has agreed to come and share what he has learned.  This is not just about how you find the best guides, but how you attract them to want to take you out for the day.  The best guides can be oversubscribed and these may well be the ones you want to hire.  So what is the trick to getting their attention and being the clients they choose.

Yes the guide wants your business, but they also want to have an enjoyable and rewarding day out.  What does that involve and how do you get the one that is right for you and will give you a fantastic experience.

The call will be broadcast at 1800GMT on Sunday.  You can watch it on this event page.  You can ask questions by writing comments under the broadcast or by using the Q&A button built into the video window.

The event will be recorded and available to watch on this page and in our youtube channel afterwards
