Excerpt about symmetry from my book "Visualizing Mathematics with 3D Printing" on the +Shapeways blog, featuring "Soliton", by +Bathsheba Sculpture!
Henry Segerman’s new book Visualizing Mathematics with 3D Printing provides non-mathematicians with exciting new ways to understand complex mathematical shapes. Segerman’s easy-to-follow book and companion website show how we can use 3D prints to gain a tactile awareness of these objects and use our full stereoscopic vision to understand them better than we ever have. A circus performance apparatus I developed with Lee Brasuell, inspired by a conversation with +Marco Paoletti.

I just translated one of my (very) short stories to English.

Ants living in a ribbon set off to explore the far west...

If you have 5mn* you may read it by clicking on the link below and tell me what you think.

*: Estimated reading time for an average reader.

Notes:
- I wrote it 19 years ago when I was 22.
- It was eventually published together with another super-short story of mine by a small press Editor together with other French sci-fi short stories by non-professional writers like me.
- This earned me something like 25 euros (or was this 25 Francs?) because this was proportional to the number of pages and my two texts totalled 8 pages.
- If you can read French you may also have a look at my other three short stories (http://arnaud-cheritat.fr/nouvelles/sf.html and sorry for the look of the page, it dates from 1997!), I wrote them a long time ago, before inspiration left me.
This was a long flat ribbon and ants used to live in it. In and not on, as these were flat ants and there was no space on either face of the strip for them to wander. In fact, there was not even room for space to be there: nothing existed outside of it, not even emptyness.

I added a section of upcoming book tour dates to the website for my book! I'll be visiting Washington DC, NYC, Boston, Atlanta and the SF Bay Area so far. Hopefully more venues to come!

I was interviewed on the HanselMinutes podcast. We talked about my book, 3D printing, mathematics, visualizing, and a bunch of other things as well!

That's awesome Henry! I saw Scott speak at a Microsoft conference earlier this year, and he was my favorite speaker of the entire conference.

+Stuart Ramsden +Marco Paoletti got me interested in the problem at first, talking about the "zigrolling" apparatus (lots of stuff comes up from a google search), which seems to be equivalent to this sphericon design, which I hadn't seen before.
