My thanks to +Christine Hall for publishing my article about a recent exchange I had with one of Reglue's most generous donors. In the decade we've been doing this, I've never ran into a prerequisite in order to maintain the donor's investing in our program. And to be fair, I did not mention in the article that many, many of you donate to our work because we do use Gnu/Linux and FOSS.

But that's where the comparison ends. None of you have ever voiced your intention to withhold your support if we decided to use a proprietary program or application that is not found in the Linuxsphere.

This is a big deal for us. Based on calendar year 2014, this company's donations represented an overall 13.4% of all annual cash donations that year. From year to year, they will choose to encourage and match employee donations up to $1000.00. Anything over that dollar amount, they will match by 25%. I don't have that annual percentage figured yet, but I promise you. It is substantial.

So here's what a Fortune 500 company wants us to do in order to maintain their generous annual donations. In the side bar conversations I've had with their main tech guy, (big FOSS supporter) they believe they are doing the responsible thing. Seeing to it that their donations are used to supply and teach our Reglue Kids in the ways of Windows and Microsoft Office. Their belief is that any other software would hinder them in the job market, and not help.

I got off the phone with someone's personal assistant via TTY at 9:40 this morning and they will take a meeting with me on this coming Friday. We'll see what they say then and I will most certainly pass the outcome of that meeting to you.

You cannot outrun a bad diet, experts warn, as they suggest greed, not sloth is causing Britain's expanding waistlines

Sugar and carbohydrates are the real culprits in the obesity epidemic - and the public has been falsely told that couch potato lifestyles are to blame, a new report has claimed.

As well as interfering with the Apple Watch's ability to maintain skin contact, tattooed skin also renders the heart rate monitor on the rear of the device useless, as further testing by iMore confirmed.

Latest TPP leak shows systemic threat to software freedom

Key congressional leaders have just agreed on a deal to fast track the fast-tracking of TPP. While the threat of TPP has persisted for years, now is the time to fight back!

On March 25th, 2015, Wikileaks released a leaked chapter of the ongoing Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations, the multinational trade agreement that is being developed through a series of secret negotiations and aims to create a host of new restrictions. We here at the FSF have been fighting against TPP for years, as it represents the threat of a world dominated by DRM, software patents, and perpetual copyright.

The latest leaked chapter on investments lays out changes to a system of supra-national courts known extrajudicial investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) tribunals. For years, these courts have enabled large companies to sue democratically-elected governments over policies that these corporations oppose. For example, Big Tobacco has used the system to block or obstruct health laws intended to reduce smoking in countries around the world.

While all of this is bad news in general, one provision in the leaked document presents a particular threat to software freedom. Holders of copyright, patent, and other proprietary interests are now included in the definition of "investor." Given the destructive nature of these provisions, the fact that proprietary developers could use them to interfere with local government protections of users' rights is cause for alarm.

But the damage doesn't stop there. The leaked provisions further clarify that these supranational courts would have jurisdiction over compliance with many of the worst provisions of TPP. That means that a proprietary developer could get a second shot at a case where they didn't like the initial outcome, potentially overturning a ruling on fair use, for example. Any country that tries to implement sane copyright and patent policy via their legislature or courts could be dragged into this sham tribunal to have that policy overturned.

The threat represented by TPP has loomed large on the horizon for many years. This latest leak demonstrates that the dangers we face increase as time goes by. Worse still, time may be running out in the U.S. to stop the madness as Obama and his friends in Congress seek to fast-track TPP approval. Key congressional leaders have now agreed on a deal to fast track the fast-tracking of TPP. Now is the time to fight back. Here is what you can do to help:

*If you are in the US, join EFF's action and write to your representatives telling them not to fast track TPP. EFF's action uses the free software tool Phantom of the Capitol.
*If you are outside the US, please contact your local representatives and let them know you oppose TPP.
*Support our work representing you in this area by becoming an FSF member or making a donation.

#Microbullshit dirty tactics as usual.

Android, Cyangogenmod, Microsoft FUD Round Up  There's a massive trolling effort underway on G+ and elsewhere by Microsoft to smear Google and Android.  Free software AOSP is somehow a monopoly while Microsoft's non free software is somehow Open.  Try making a fork of any Apple or Microsoft OS and see what happens.  Well, I'd like to laugh about it but can't because Microsoft has been so successful with this line of BS.  The subject matter and time frame is large enough for memory to be fuzzy and Microsoft is loud enough to drown everyone else out.

The cyanogenmod story.  Good luck removing Microsoft's crapware from your phone.

Meanwhile, you have always been free to mod Android and then get the Google playstore on your own.  Replicant is yet another Android mod that is completely free software that GNU told you to put your effort into.  There are plenty of other Android mods out there, including Kindle, etc.

There's also plenty of OS choices for ARM tablets and phones.  FirefoxOS, Ubuntu, several custom ROMs by OEMs, and what's left of Nokia's once proud gnu/linux adventure, Jolia.  All of this is possible because OEMs rejected Microsoft interference in ARM years ago,

http://mrpogson.com/2011/05/31/microsoft-squeaks-no-one-listens/

Arm is a viable market today because OEMs did not want it to be like X86.

At the same time, Microsoft has mounted a massive FUD campaign to call Google a monopoly and itself "Open".  The audacity is truly amazing.

Cyanogen and Microsoft today announced a new partnership to bundle Microsoft apps and integrate various services with Cyanogen OS. In the announcement (received by email), the two companies will work together to offer a unique experience for Cyanogen users with native integration. Bing, Skype, OneDrive, OneNote, Outlook and Microsoft Office were mentioned in the announcement....
