I just responded to an email from a dear friend of mine. We don't talk all the time, but a little here and there on Facebook. He heard that I specialize in small business strategy.
He was asking about Local Business Directory listings and How to claim your listing Well just happens that we provide this service and at a very reasonable rate. But he just needed some quick advice.
Well, OK. So I gave him two quick tips.
And because you're a valued http://OnTrackTips.com subscriber, I'm telling you the same thing I told him.
⇒ One thing you can do is to type "Your Business Name" into Google, and see what shows up on front page. Then go into those directories listings and look for ways to claim the listing. This will tell you which directories have scraped your content already and which directories are already ranking your business. It's the best place to start. The reason you want to claim your listing is that now you can edit the information, add a website link, add some photos, some social media links, some products, and monitor reviews.
⇒ The next step is to type in "Your Business Keyword" into Google and see what shows up (restaurants in St. Louis, Coffee Shops in Mytown, Gas stations in Yourtown). You're looking for your name and the name of your closest competitor. If you don't see your listing, go to the directory and "submit your business".
So, after giving this valuable advice I closed the email with "I hope this helps"
That got me thinking, of course this helped! It was free, expert advice that saved them time and money!
When you close with I hope this helped, it leaves the door open for them to say, "Well, it was helpful, but can you explain how to do it a little better?" See the problem?
What you're doing is allowing a non-paying individual to a rate your services. And at some point, of course you'll pull the trigger and invite them to try your services. Unfortunately, in many cases they're not looking to hire you, they just want to pick your brain.
So now you're in a pickle. You keep giving free advice, or your stop at which point they decide, "Well, he wasn't really that helpful." Meaning, he didn't give me everything for free.
So never end your free correspondence with "I hope that helped"
Instead, write, "And if you want to hear more about our services, you can stop on by your contact link" (for example: http://ontracktips.com/get-updates/)
Does this help?
