"Empathy is an important foundation for teaching social justice, which more and more school are including in their curricula throughout the grades. Now more than ever, children must learn to understand and respect their own origins and those of others, to celebrate diversity, to notice and push back on unfair treatment, and to believe in their abilities to incite change."
by Anna Gratz Cockerille. In the classic novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Atticus Finch teaches his children, “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view … until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it.” Empathy is the ability to understand the ...

"In short, I have followed Jennifer very closely over the years, and today I finally got to see her in person. The truth, however, is that I felt like I had already met her. I have watcher her videos, and was part of her Digital Campus course, so I feel like I have been in a classroom with her. I've watched her live on Facebook and read her tweets in chats. But today, as I found myself face to face with her, I was suddenly so starstruck. And then I realized it was gratitude."-- Leah O'Donnell on her blog Responsive Literacy

"Children do not go from no understanding of one-to-one correspondence to complete understanding in a moment, or in a class day. And even when we think children have an understanding, we can see them developing a deeper understanding of this principle."

"We English teachers are a lucky bunch. Many gigantic thinkers have come before us, and quite a few others travel among us now. By cracking a book, or flicking on a Kindle, we can walk beside them anytime."
Every so often we like to ask our authors about the books that most affected their teaching, the books that served as turning points in their practice or opened their eyes to a new way of approaching their work, thinking about education, or seeing children. In this installment, we bring you the ...

"The moment my students walk into my room, they know that this is a place where we will read: together, individually, side-by-side."
In 2009, I interviewed for the PA Writing and Literature Project (PAWLP) Summer Institute. During the interview, Deb Dinsmore, one of the institute facilitators, asked me something that I have never forgotten: “How do you teach reading?” How do I teach reading? I wasn't sure how to answer.

Written by Anna Gratz Cockerille. The start of a new calendar year brings a sense of renewal, possibility, and novelty. It is a time for reflection, and certainly, as the number of people who make New Year's resolutions shows, for goal-setting. Hopefully, your students (and you!) have returned from the ...

Every day, our students are inundated by information—as well as opinions and misinformation—on their devices. These digital texts influence them. In Argument in the Real World, Kristen Hawley Turner and Troy Hicks share a wealth of insights and practical strategies for teaching students the logic of argument.

"For me...focusing much of my class on students’ independent reading meant letting go of the whole-class novel. I won’t lie: this was hard. Like many of us, I was drawn to teaching English in large part because I love literature, because books transformed and saved my life. Teaching literature, I thought, was my job."--Kate Flowers

"If we can give students concrete tools for reading and writing informational texts, help them develop a sensitivity to bias, author intent, to ask for evidence and to know what good evidence looks like, then students will be on their way to establishing their own incorruptible critical literacy."

"(In Middle school) students are asked to write to show knowledge, and it is the content of their writing that is assessed, not the quality of their writing. But in middle school and often far beyond, students are still in dire need of instruction in how to write."
by Anna Gratz Cockerille. If you are a middle school teacher who has chosen to teach writing using a workshop model, you know that it is possible for students to choose writing topics that fuel their passions and to write to high standards simultaneously. You know that giving students freedom to ...
