Hi, Mark, nice to see you here!

Mark Engstrom- happy to be in the group and looking forward to this journey with everyone!

I am part of a group looking to open a blended learning non-profit school in Houston, TX in August of 2015.  We're piecing together a Board of Directors and some preliminary philosophy statements right now.  Building (a church rental) and Head of School (me) are already in place.  Looking forward to getting to know everyone, finding out about your journeys and learning how to put a school together!

Some evidence for later school starting ages and later starts to reading.  60 sight works need to be memorized in K in my neck of the woods-- it's terrible.

Week 1 Reading

The idea of "portraits" and "sketches" of schools captured my imagination, even as the skeptical side of my brain wondered how much we can really keep the influence of the observer out of such "soft" research on existing schools.  Lightfoot's work does capture something about schools that the general public has found it hard to accept-- good schools are a mix of art and science.  We can crunch numbers and create structures for some things that make for better learning environments, but other things like the essential human interactions that make learning so exciting are impossible to objectively measure.

Hi, my name is Heddi Craft and I have a variety of hats. I am a curriculum consultant, I've been a teacher (mostly in alternative education settings), and also do some volunteer work with the homeschool community in my area. Starting a school has been a dream of mine for many years.

Now here's how to give a test that models the way we have to apply knowledge in the "real world." Thanks, EdSurge for the heads up!
