No, it is just a front panel to my desktop. One USB cable goes out the back to my tower.

If I'm writing an app for elementary, is there a specific namespace I should be using for things like gsettings/dconf? org.pantheon.myapp? Or should I be creating my own since I'm not officially connected to elementary?

Ideally find an umbrella to put yourself under.  If your project is associated with GNOME (ie: hosted on gnome.org) you'd use org.gnome, even without some sort of "official approval".

Some people have extended this idea to using other domains -- for example, if I'm 'desrt' on github, I might use com.github.desrt..  I think I've also seen at least once an email address like com.gmail.accountname..

Robert is right: the most important thing is that you don't clash.  The other thing to keep in mind is to choose a name that won't change soon so that your users don't get their settings lost if you move the path.

Oh great and wise vala app devs, I want to make a button in my app that launches the user's default file browser. How do I make this happen?

To those of you running what will become Freya, can you have the dock and/or panel on multiple monitors?

+Heath Paddock We could probably just make the animation super fast like 150ms on each side or something :p There's a bug report here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/pantheon-dock/+bug/1259816

I just talked to someone who included the decryption key to their database password in the same config file as the encrypted password. They argued that the sysadmins didn't have access to the code so they couldn't decrypt it. Also provided in the config file: the name of the encryption algorithm. #facepalm

Assuming you have Numix installed, /usr/share/icons/Numix/scalable/actions/view-grid-symbolic.svg makes a nice applications button replacement.

Thoughts on something like this?
https://mizage.com/divvy/

+Tom Beckmann would it be better implemented as a stand alone app or as a gala plugin?

+Heath Paddock yeah, but you'll need a gazillion hotkeys if you want various widths of the window while it's sticked to the left :)

Has anyone worked with glib-compile-resources + vala? I've successfully generated a .c file, but I'm not sure what goes in the cmake file to make the magic happen. Do I need a VAPI for that?

EDIT: Pixbuf.from_inline seems to be another options, but I'm still unclear, once I get the data file, how do I include it in the project?

Has anyone gotten GtkInspector or gtkparasite working on Freya? I've gotten them both compiled and installed, but can't seem to get them running.

I tried this:
$GTK_DEBUG=interactive appname
and this:
$ GTK_MODULES=gtkparasite appname

Edit: I just noticed GtkInspector was added for 3.14 so that won't work for Freya. Should I hold out hope for parasite?

Hey look, you can have plank show on two monitors at the same time.
http://www.heath-bar.com/blog/?p=761 #Luna  #Freya
Dual docks in elementary OS. When using two monitors in elementary OS the dock only shows on one monitor. I prefer to have it shown on both monitors. Here's how it's done: Open the terminal and enter the following commands to create a new dock definition with the same settings as your current ...

+Heath Paddock I'll see if I can get that into elementary-tweaks sometime soon. You have any feedback if it's relatively stable?

I was thinking it might be nice to have something like Apple Script on Linux. Typically I'll write a bash script, but I don't do it enough to remember the syntax. Plus I have to remember to run it at startup or schedule a cron job. It's not stupid-proof. The only thing I can think of that comes close is cuttlefish.

What do you guys think? Do we need a better automation tool? Would it be worth the time to invent a new scripting language? Or do we use AppleScript as the language and start by creating an app that runs AppleScripts on Linux?

A quick and dirty substitute for "GUI scripting" may be a GUI testing app, something like eggPlant. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_GUI_testing_tools
