Well, this is just fascinating.

A visual microphone that can pick up sound from vibrations in video footage
"Algorithm recovers speech from the vibrations of a potato-chip bag filmed through soundproof glass"

via http://goo.gl/Mnt2cD

Project website: http://people.csail.mit.edu/mrub/VisualMic/

"When sound hits an object, it causes small vibrations of the object’s surface. We show how, using only high-speed video of the object, we can extract those minute vibrations and partially recover the sound that produced them, allowing us to turn everyday objects—a glass of water, a potted plant, a box of tissues, or a bag of chips—into visual microphones."

"We also explore how to leverage the rolling shutter in regular consumer cameras to recover audio from standard frame-rate videos, and use the spatial resolution of our method to visualize how sound-related vibrations vary over an object’s surface, which we can use to recover the vibration modes of an object."

This is so cool I wish I could take a 3-hour lunch break to really understand how it works!

Excuse my while I pick my brain bits off the floor and wall. This is as impressive as the processor frequency listening IMO.

Wish that I had come up with this. Very cool implementation of tech. I wonder how many different useful actions this could perform.

I don't often share "activist" sort of videos, but this falls firmly under the education category as well. If you care about the internet and your access to it please watch the video and think about how this could effect you.

I remember posting about the crash of Morpheus about a year back. I am very glad to see that the project was able to stay on track. This is a pretty impressive test flight. Reminds me of +SpaceX Grasshopper videos. Congratulations on another successful test +NASA.

I  have not felt the urge to share anything for a while, however, +Head Squeeze and Hannah Fry bring up some thought provoking topics here. The general topic is the progression of artificial intelligence and how given enough time the propagation of intelligence is statistically fascinating.

Great to see Venture Capitalists like Sean O'Sullivan working with Khan Academy. Without investments like these +Khan Academy may never have grown to be what it is today. Keep up the good work.

Black holes remain fascinating to me. The first object to be recognized as a black hole was Cygnus X-1. While it is not 100% confirmed to be a black hole it does match all of the physical requirements of one. We have only known about an actual block hole for less than 50 years.

This is such an ingenious device. The world needs more projects like this.

Just try and wrap your head around how many stars there are in our universe. It blows my mind each and every time.

Recently I have been captivated by our Sun. The SDO and +NASA Goddard have provided us with amazing video of our star in action and it is increasingly difficult to not be impressed by complexity and intrigued by its physical behavior.
