My boyfriend and I went there on a week day evening after work for dinner and when I arrived there was about a 20 minute wait which was normal for a dinner rush. I sat down and it took about 10 minutes to be greeted then about another 10 minutes to just have my glass of water brought to me. Our waitress who was very kind didn't even offer to take our order when she brought the drinks because she had to go greet another table so we waited about an extra 5 minutes to put our order in. Now I have worked in food service for about 6 years now and the amount of time for everything to get done is ridiculous. About 7 tables in the place total and I counted the seats so only about 20-25 people could dine in at one time. We ordered 2 pieces of chicken and one waffle each. They refused to add one piece of chicken even though I did not mind paying extra. Everything around us smelt wonderful. Unfortunately, an hour and 15 min went by after putting in the order with no food or word as to where it was. We asked how much longer it would be and the poor waitress did not have an answer for us. Take out customers were more of a priority it seemed because they were flying in and out of there. At that point we decided that we had enough. About 2 hours waiting for service and food which brought us to about 8:30pm was too much. We live 45 minutes from West Hartford and heard such great things but unfortunately we were not able to even try to food. We went to another restaurant down the street and service was great. It's a shame because something that should be cooked so quickly and easily took extremely too long. We were so excited to try it out. Advice is don't bother going unless you have take out which even then they said would take about 45 min to an hour. On the plus side, what was around smelled very good. Probably won't go back to try though.

Hi Patty, my apologies for what you experienced. I am not sure what transpired. I do have a question for you... why would wait any longer than 30min without voicing your concerns to someone? At 45-60 min I would have asked for a manager immediately. But 2 hours? That's insane. There would be absolutely NO REASON for any order to take that long. If you don't voice your concern, me as the owner would not know of your situation and can't correct it so it doesn't happen again. The only time we were extremely swamped and caught us off guard and we did experience unusually long waits (45-60min) was when an article in the local newspaper came out and everyone just had to try us at the EXACT same moment. It was as if there was no other moment we would be available. We had a line out the door for 3 days and this delayed our kitchen as we were not staffed properly. But no one waited more than an hour per my knowledge. As for our take out service, yes we tell customers 45-60 min wait when we feel the kitchen is backed up and to alert customers of the delay. Some people don't mind waiting, others won't order. You can't say just because you saw take out orders flying out door that they took precedent because you do not know when those orders were placed or how long they took. We process orders in the order they are received in the kitchen. Again, this goes to anyone reading this review, if you are waiting more than 20-25 min ask your server what is going on. If your hitting the 30-45 min mark, complain to a manager. We will then investigate and find out what is going on. On average our dishes take 15-25 min, depending on the amount of food order for the table and what was ordered. Our fried chicken is cooked when ordered, so it takes longer. All of our food is fresh and thus the reason for longer serving times than most places. We do not own a microwave, no cans are used, nothing is frozen, nor prepackaged. When you place your order we actually cook your food from its raw state until its done. Again, my sincerists apologies. I hope you and your boyfriend allow us the opportunity for a second chance. We are a brand new restaurant, less than 90 days old, and yes I will be the first to admit we have many kinks to work out as we establish the parameters for our operation. I really wish you would have asked for a manager that day, so that we could investigate what transpired. Its the only way we will know if something is broken. Voicing your opinion after the fact in a public forum does not allow us the opportunity to correct as we do not know the specifics of what exactly occurred so we can fix right then and there. It could have been something as simple as the kitchen ticket not printing, or a server who forgot to put in the order and realized an hour too late. Regardless, once again, my apologies for what you experienced. Sincerely, - Justin (Proprietor)

Excellent food. Service was average, but I will chock it up as new business pains. Owning a restaurant is NOT easy. It takes time to get all the elements just right. No one is 100% right off the bat. Even 5 star restaurants take YEARS to acquire those 5 and even 3 or 4 stars.

Attended a soft opening of this place, and they had the best Fried Chicken around. My wife ordered the Gluten Free version, and it was just as remarkable. Could barely tell the difference. Spot On! Next time I'm trying the Chicken & Waffles!

FAREWELL FOLKS! HEARTY KITCHEN (The Restaurant) HAS CLOSED.

Dear friends and loyal patrons,

We've decided to throw in the towel.

Due to an overwhelming family situation, keeping Hearty Kitchen open is just not manageable for us any more, even with limited hours.

So our doors are now closed.

But fear not! Though the restaurant aspect of our culinary adventures may have come to a close, we still have many plans a brewin' for the Hearty Kitchen brand.

Catering, artisanal spices, and our signature recipe concepts available at other local eateries… these are just a few of the things to look forward to from your friends here at Hearty Kitchen.

So stay tuned!

We would like to thank each and every one of you for your tremendous support of our little mom & pop shop. Y'all made us feel welcome in the community right from the first moment we opened our doors, and thanks to YOU we've had an awesome run.

We loved filling your bellies with sheer deliciousness, and with our upcoming endeavors we hope to do that once more!

Talk soon,
- Irina & Justin

P.S. If anyone is interested in the business, and you think you have what it takes to run Hearty Kitchen, the restaurant (physical & financial), please get a hold of us. We are accepting offers in the form of a partnership or straight purchase.

So pleased to announce our newest partnership. We are now getting fresh, local produce from the lovely folks over at Grow Hartford. Seems these guys are the superheroes of farming, harvesting thousands of pounds of fruits and vegetables from 3 locations in Hartford, running a CSA for low-income households, a summer youth program that teaches teens about food justice and where our food comes from, and they still have time to vend at the local farmers markets!

They're a true grassroots leader in our community (since 1978!), and we are so proud to serve their food at our little mom & pop shop. Be sure to check them out, and if you swing through the market, tell them Hearty Kitchen sent you.
