Diabetes is a global epidemic and a leading cause of disease and death. The fact fewer than half of patients with type 2 diabetes have their disease well controlled highlights the need for new, affordable, effective medications that are not limited by unfavorable side effects. Now, a pooled analysis of nine studies that examined the effect of oral aloe vera in people with diabetes and pre-diabetes suggests the medicinal plant should be further investigated as an antidiabetic compound.

A major pathway leading to brain cell death in mice has been blocked by an orally administered drug-like compound, successfully preventing neurodegeneration in the animals.
While this particular compound also resulted in unacceptable weight loss, the finding provides a new target for future drugs to treat neurodegenerative disorders in humans, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases

Diabetes is a disorder of blood sugar levels. There are two main types of diabetes, plus rarer forms such as diabetes that can happen during pregnancy, known as gestational diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes results in high blood sugar levels because the body stops producing insulin, the hormone that regulates sugar levels. Type 2 diabetes leads to high blood sugars because the insulin in the body does not work effectively.

Researchers are reporting that early rapid improvements in the signs and symptoms of axial spondyloarthritis in patients treated with certolizumab pegol are maintained at 4 years.
Dr. Desiree van der Heijde, with Leiden University Medical Centre in the Netherlands, and colleagues elsewhere examined outcomes at week 204 in patients who were randomized to certolizumab pegol or placebo as part of the phase III RAPID-axSpA trial.l/

New treatments for Parkinson’s disease could be in sight, after researchers reveal how inhibiting the activity of a specific protein in the brain could stop or slow development of the disease. What is more, there is already a drug approved for the treatment of leukemia that can block the protein in question.

An adjustable foot wrap that applies pressure to two muscles in the foot may offer patients with restless legs syndrome an effective alternative to drugs as a way to ease symptoms when trying to rest or go to sleep. In a pilot study, researchers found the device was 1.4 times as effective as a standard drug treatment.
