KBR to Create a Government Affairs Director Position
When dealing with any local government agency I think it is fair to say that most of us “don’t know what we don’t know.” I calm myself by repeating,
“this undertaking is a journey of discovery, a process that will lead to new doors“.
Have you ever tried to get clarification on a real estate matter at the counter of one of our government agencies? The person behind the counter just looks at you and says nothing. With your mind racing you are wondering if you asked a question completely unrelated to the Department. Did I get a visual acknowledgement of understanding? Am I disrupting their workday? Should I go back to the office and never return?
All you are looking for is factual, accurate information. Sometimes that requires more than one trip to the counter and a whole array of questions. We can never have too much information about “how Kauai operates”.
The Kauai Board of Realtors has recognized that our organization needs to dedicate time for information gathering and clarification regarding “how Kauai operates”. It is a full time job keeping abreast with all the things that affect Realtors and their clients.
In light of that, the KBR Board of Directors has approved hiring someone to fill a position that will be titled Government Affairs Director. This position will be dedicated to monitoring local and state happenings that affect our industry and both client and public property rights.
In the past we have relied on volunteers to fill this need but we can no longer leave anything to chance or the goodwill of our volunteers. As Realtors we must be an active participant in our local government and be alert to issues that have an impact on property values and land use.
RPAC (Realtor Political Action Committee), which is the Realtor’s national organization for political monitoring and voicing opinions, is becoming more powerful nationally and also requires our support. We need to support them financially and vocally when there is a call to action.
We need to let our elected officials on Kauai and our administration know that we are there to support them and in return we want them to listen to the Realtor voice that cares about Kauai and it’s future.
It’s time we met the challenge and changed our image to that of an association that works hard for the community not just ourselves.
