I took a private canoe trip with Hawaiian Paddle Sports. I got there early and they were already setting up. Jay was the nicest person to deal with! I hadn't kayaked before and he was very nice about it and seemed happy to go at my slower pace. He knew right where to go - we got fairly close to a couple of humpbacks and saw tons of turtles. The scenery was fabulous, Jay took great pictures!, and I really had a great time. I would highly recommend this company.

A humpback breached perfectly vertically about 40 feet in front of me. Our guide, Tim, knew exactly where to find the whale(s), and led us directly to them. He was very knowledgable on a number of subjects including Hawaii's navigational history, the world of whales and the ocean in general. It was a magical experience.

Our guide was wonderful--very information, enthusiastic, hard-working, and patient. We were blessed with great weather on the day of our trip and the water was the clearest we had seen it in a long time! Paddling on the outrigger was quite enjoyable, but, since many of the other paddlers were novices, we didn't get very far and most of the paddlers definitely didn't paddle very hard or in any kind of organized manner. It might help to offer two separate trips--one for people who just want to leisurely paddle and don't care if they get out far enough to actually see whales and one for people who really want to dig in and paddle and have more opportunities for up close encounters with whales (which is what was advertised when we called and talked to the staff in your office). Bottom line: my husband and I are active, worldwide travelers and we don't mind paying premium prices for premium wildlife viewing experiences. But, your trip was exorbitantly overpriced for the experience provided. Either reduce the price and tell people up front that chances are they will be taking the trip with people who have little to no paddling experience and are not physically "fit"/active or offer two levels of trips: easy/novice and more challenging/experienced paddler. And, as is, we spent a significant amount of our "trip" time snorkeling with the masses at the turtle cleaning station when what we were told up front when we booked the trip was that it was a paddling trip designed specifically for whale encounters and that there would be minimal to no snorkeling. We are certified scuba divers and snorkel and dive regularly--we didn't need to pay $300+ for a snorkeling experience among literally a hundred other people. Overall, though, I would still probably recommend you to others, especially if they are not specifically interested in a whale-watching trip on an outrigger.

HPS is #1 for a reason. We went kayak whale watching and it was an amazing experience. Our guide Rowdy was informative, knowledgeable and really fun and easy-going. She even gave us a little lesson in speaking Hawaiian! She obviously truly loves these incredible creatures that she gets to work with every day. She got us up close without ever being "too close" in terms of the whale's boundaries. We hung out with a whale mom and her baby and it was one of the highlights of our trip. I would recommend Hawaiian Paddle Sports not only for the experience but because they are conservation minded (use reef-protecting sun screen folks.) Thanks Rowdy!

Great trip out of Olowalu....full humpback breach 100 yards off our double hull canoe bow. Surely a rare experience, but Tim also had us on top of several whales such that we could hear them clear as day underneath us. Paddling was fun - even managed to surf a wave back towards beach. Hard to beat.

Went out with Tim, what an amazing experience. Started off with a very informative and interesting talk. paddling with the gang was a blast and then.... the whales :) Went in Feb and having the whales swim up that close to us was awesome !! Around the canoe and under it, it was one of those moments that make your trip worth it if nothing else is done. Thanks to all.

Our party of 4 went on the Kayak whale watch on March 11, 2015. The weather was cloudy, cool and a bit rainy but we had a great time anyway! We had numerous whale sightings, including two extremely close ones where a family of whales swam up to within a few feet of the kayak. I dipped my GoPro into the water and got a terrific underwater shot of the whales! Jason was our guide and he was excellent. He taught us about kayak safety, whale watching etiquette and the history of Maui. If you go on a day with questionable weather, I recommend you dress in layers. However, make sure you do not wear cotton! Wear polyester running gear, or something similar that can still keep you warm when wet and dries quickly. I would also recommend a hat. Just make sure it's on tight or has a draw string to secure it under your chin. Highly recommended!

Superb experience; we went out in an outrigger canoe with a team of 12 or so--I was reluctant to be in such a big group but now that I've done it, I wouldn't do it any other way. So go for the outrigger canoe choice--you can't beat the team camaraderie and the spirit of paddling through the water together. Plus, you can't beat Tim as a guide. Phenomenal. Beautiful, brilliant man who will make you feel like you've landed on a marine documentary set with the world's most eligible bachelor as your mentor. If he doesn't have an answer, he'll find it for you--and his respect and care for the ocean is genuine. I cannot give this experience enough stars.
