We booked a "room with a view," except the only view to be found was through the tiny bathroom window. The big window in the room looked out at a group of trees blocking "the view." Don't get fooled into thinking you'll get to see the volcano at night, the odds aren't in your favor. Dinner also sucked, the pizza was like the kind you make yourself (with some naan or pita and sauce), without all the fun of doing so. We normally have such good experience with national parks that we paid no attention to bad reviews, but in this case, the reviews really do say it all. However, definitely visit the park, it's amazing, just not the hotel.

Where to begin?...for starters they somehow lost our reservation, the staff explained that "it was written in a place that no one would think to look". Our appetizers were overpriced, tasteless and generally unappealing, then the kitchen somehow managed to ruin all four entrées at our table. An order of rack of lamb was first delivered charred to a crisp then practically raw on the second attempt...the order was comped but hardly made up for being sent away hungry. The two orders of pasta at our table were absolutely tasteless and missing half the ingredients promised on the menu. My Stuffed Big Island Chicken arrived as a thigh rather than a breast without notice of substitution, maybe they thought that by charring it beyond recognition I wouldn't notice. It was suppose to be stuffed with Hamakua mushroom, arugula and goat cheese to which I discovered barely a hint of, the expected glaze was either missing entirely or had completely evaporated somewhere in the process, the jasmine rice was sub'd for a sticky mess of subpar sushi rice. If sub-standard pub food at five times the price is what you're searching for then you're in the right spot...my recommendation is to avoid this restaurant all costs!

The views are amazing from the restaurant; we watched the sun set and the volcano glow at night. This was a highlight on our trip to the Big Island!

Awful. We were gold to expect a 5 minute wait despite most of the tables being open. 20 minutes later our names hadn't been called and we walked out.

To start this is frustrating that I have to give them a star just to write a review!! The menu was over priced and nothing looked appealing after driving all the way from Kona...We wanted to order the stuffed chicken w some changes which they couldn't accommodate because it was pre-made so we decided that was fine and placed our order. Then we asked for bread because we overheard the table next to us also ask as we walked up!! This is the BEST part...we then heard another waitress tell the table next to us the specials for the night which actually sounded good!! We were never told of any specials...so we asked our waitress and she stated "No, unless you know something I don't know"...we apologized and told her we must of misheard the other waitress...She then left the table and came back saying " o ya thier was specials tonight"...btw our reservation was at 8 pm which means no one else before us got the specials either lol!! Long story short DON'T eat there!!

I just stayed at the Volcano House Hotel for two days (2-4-15/2-5-15) and it was a good experience. The room was nice but simple, free wi-fi, no tv, or pool, excellent maid and front desk service. We ate at the Hotel restaurant both evenings and had the buffet breakfast both mornings and the food was good and very reasonably priced. The fish of the day plate was my favorite, but the steak salad and sashimi platter were good also, my only critique would be I wish there was a bit more sashimi. The first day we did the 2.2 mile crater rim hike to the Volcano observatory which was cool, walking by the steam vents and seeing the Kilauea caldera from many angles. The second day we did the crater drive down to the ocean stopping at all the different craters and lava tube and petroglyphs, ending at the sea arch and lava cliffs and caves. The Volcano Arts center and Volcano Visitor center across the street from the Hotel are filled with interesting exhibits and friendly employees. Overall it was a great experience and would recommend it to anyone interested in geology and the islands and state of HI.

Very overpriced! Tourist trap. Avoid the poke! You are better off going to Foodland or Safeway.

This review is for the hotel. On the website they sell their views as an excuse for charging 300+ for a room. Needless to say I was a little upset when I checked into my room and gazed upon my fabulous view of the parking lot. I was slightly misled, accept responsibility for it, but still think this place is incredibly overpriced.
